This is a topic for discussion, but my guess is that this is
not going to be possible in literal PreTeXt-style Markdown.
Images typically need a caption, alt text, and size specification.
That type of (meta)data is very cumbersome to do in a way that is
natural and intuitive to Markdown.
So, faced with the option of either make some non-intuitive
sort-of Markdowny way, which most users have to look up repeatedly,
vs. the perfectly good (and not too difficult to use) existing
PreTeXt syntax, my guess is that we will choose the second option.
I am just expressing my opinion about a topic currently under discussion.
Note that if you are using a good editor, if you just start typing
<fig
and then hit TAB, if automatically makes the opening and closing
figure tags, and inside it it automatically makes the caption tags.
So, you don't really have to type all those tags and angle brackets.
Regards,
David
ps to Oscar: maybe the shortdescription and image.source should
also automatically appear in a bare figure?
