Is there a way to add alt tags to images so we can be good accessibility citizens?

Ah, thanks. Our rst -> PreTeXt conversion had preserved the alt tags from our images but I noticed they didn't do anything in PreTeXt. I didn't think to look for a child element to do the same thing.

We can even do better than alt tags. The short description will give you an alt tag, but this is often not enough (e.g. if you need to describe a graph to a calculus student) so there's also the long description.

As an info button. See here, for example:

If you author <description> with plain text, I think there's some backwards compatibility to turn it into <shortdescription>.

But as soon as you put a <p> inside it becomes a long description.
