I think there's an old discussion on this, but I couldn't find it.

Currently if an author adds a "long" description for an image, the icon we use to indicate that it's there is a document icon: it looks like a page of text, with one corner folded down.
(Sort of like the Libre Office writer icon.)

Will that be universally recognised as something that contains image information?

I've noticed that when news website have similar descriptive text associated with an image, they use an information icon that looks like a lower case i with a circle around it. I wonder if that would look better, but I don't recall what reasons led to the icon currently in use.

We are using a particular icon library, and this icon in use is the
one from that library that is called "description", so I just went
with that. If you browse through that icon library and find something
better, that's great.

I don't know if the official name for an icon might pass along some
semantic meaning though, say to assistive technology. If the library
has an i-with-circle, I'd be a tad cautious if the official name for
that icon is something that seems way off from what we would do with
it. That's coming from someone who does not know this icon library
well though, and it may be an overly cautious concern that is
unwarranted. I try not to abuse PTX tag names, and that habit might be
bleeding over into icon names.

One author's opinion: I'm partial to the "circle-i". I see it enough that I
know it will offer something additional about whatever I'm looking at close-by.

There is a similar Unicode character:

https://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/24d8/index.htm

Not sure if that is helpful.

I could look through the icon set for options, although I'm not exactly sure where it lives. I might have some time to poke around this morning.

I used to like Unicode characters for icons. The problem became like on phone X using browser Y, the font in use won't have a glyph for the character and you won't know until a report comes in.

That's fair. Where does the icon set live? I took a look through the pretext repo on GitHub but must not have looked in the right place.

The symbol Rob and I are thinking of is called "info" in the Google icon set:

And Andrew S has made every one of those icons easily usable within the HTML
conversion. As interface elements, not as authored-source elements, the latter
being a whole different thing.

Look for a named template with name "insert-symbol". Defined near Line 8815 of
pretext-html.xsl, and employed near Line 6312. I think a change would be as
simple as replacing 'description' with 'info'.

Right. I can make that change to test for my own builds. I'd want to know if Alex has any concerns before submitting that as a global change.

I'm fine with that change. At some future time, I am curious to learn
what first-hand experience is for an AT-user using this. If the icon
library does not carry attributes that explain what the icon is for,
then there is nothing to worry about.

A related question: do we have any advice on testing for AT use?

E.g. let's say I wanted to test and/or demonstrate things like keyboard navigation, MathJax features, etc and I don't have a license for Kurtzweil or something like that.

What's the best way to get an idea of how things work?

If you are on Windows or have access to it, NVDA is free and OSS:
https://www.nvaccess.org/download/
My understanding is that it is considered a "pretty good" tool. Not as good as JAWS, but if something doesn't work using it, there is at least a decent chance it is due to the markup rather than the tool.

ORCA is free and works on linux. I haven't used it, but it doesn't seem to have a great reputation. If it mangled something I would have less confidence that the problem was in the markup.

On a Mac, I've tried Apple VoiceOver. It's been a challenge to learn
to operate (which I still do not do very well) but I imagine that
might be true for any screen reader. But on the plus side I have been
able to discern something was bad, change it, and then discern that
the change made things better.

Maybe not what you are asking about, but I also find Firefox's
Accessibility tool in the developer tools to be useful for identifying
issues.

Thanks. I tried a screen reader extension for Chrome once, and it wasn't great.

I think it would read out what various elements were (section, paragraph, math, etc) but didn't read the actual text between these things.

I couldn't figure out how to get NVDA to read content on any webpage! As I move the mouse around it tells me what application window I'm hovering over, but that's as far as I got.
I'll play around some more tomorrow.

I think hitting the TAB key in a web browser will move you from place to place
(not sure what those places are). Hit ENTER on "Skip to main content" right at
the beginning of PreTeXt output and it will skip *all* the table-o-contents links.

Put your mouse in a drawer. If you were blind it wouldn't help you much.

Reading

Subsection 4.38.1: PreTeXt provided accessibility features
https://pretextbook.org/doc/guide/html/topic-accessibility.html#subsec-accessibility-automatic

will help with the math bits.

I'm sure there are others who could be more help. I should go build that
"pretext-a11y" Google Group I keep threating to make.

Thanks for the MathJax instructions.

I found the "skip to main content" button. After that, tabbing seems to go from one permalink to the next, but not to the paragraph next to a permalink.

With a free screen reader extension for Chrome, I couldn't get the "skip to main content" button. And then tabbing would take me from one math item to the next, skipping the text in between!

I will make sure I have the MathJax accessibility turned on next time I try.

Sorry for the delay chipping in here...

The icon library does not provide any descriptions for icons. Anywhere one is used, and its use is non-decorative, something needs to be done to provide an accessible version of the message the icon is trying to communicate.

The existing code to insert an icon adds the attribute aria-hidden="true". The assumption is that the icon will be inside some other element that provides the context and is the actual interactive element. e.g. the navbar buttons. The button is the clickable element and is responsible for being accessible. The icon is just some eye candy that is on the button.

When that item is navigated to NVDA announces it as "Button collapsed. details". The "details" is from the title of the summary:
<summary title="details"><span class="icon material-symbols-outlined" aria-hidden="true"></span></summary>

That could use improvement - making the title "Details for figure" would change the output to "Button collapsed. Details for figure.". It would also improve the tooltip.

p.s.
I also slightly prefer the circle-i for that use case. Add one more vote to the "yes please" column.

p.p.s. I'll try to record a quick crash course video of navigating with NVDA soon. I could use one for my webdev class anyway. :)

I opened a pull request to change the icon. Improving the information that comes with it would involve the same part of the xsl, I think.

I could add another commit to that PR if there's agreement on how to change it.

Today I had more luck with NVDA. (Maybe it's the usual Windows story of needing to reboot for something to work properly...)

Two things weren't ideal:
1. It quickly read out the 'skip to main content' button and kept going... I had trouble trying to get to it with the tab key

2. For every bit of MathJax it reads out something like "application interactive" before reading the math content

A quick crash course would definitely be welcome.

PS: the MathJax menu seems to no longer have the "explorer" under accessibility. But once you turn on accessibility the subtitles are on by default.

Sean's PR for the change to "circle-i" has been merged. Thanks, Sean.

I like the change, and now see where some small improvements could be made.
Take a look at

Figure 9.18
https://pretextbook.org/examples/sample-article/html/section-graphics.html#figure-sage-exosagevec1

for example.

* There is a default triangle indicating if the details are open or closed. It
sits on the baseline, aligned with the bottom of the circle, which looks a bit
haphazard (while the previous icon was rectangular and it was not so odd looking).

* There is a rectangle, as wide as the image above it, which is clickable - not
just the triangle and the icon contained within. Not sure that is desirable?
Perhaps it should only be as wide as the triangle and icon need? Maybe we don't
need/want the triangle? Though it is a standard thing, certainly. Maybe the
circle-i could change somehow for open v. closed?

* In Firefox and Chrome I get an I-bar cursor on hover over the icon. Perhaps
anything clickable should show a cursor that indicates that? I think some early
prototypes of details/summary that were copied from other places may have had
this hard-coded.

A PR from someone with the necessary CSS skills would be appreciated!

With a free screen reader extension for Chrome, I couldn't get the "skip to main content" button. And then tabbing would take me from one math item to the next, skipping the text in between!
Peek at https://github.com/PreTeXtBook/pretext/pull/2158 where this (not getting a skip button) may be a Chrome problem that is not a Firefox problem. (For which Andrew S has a fix.)
