Dear Dawn,

Last week, the government announced its proposals to lock away even more people in immigration detention and remove people from the UK on a much larger scale.

Worryingly, they also committed to the previous government’s plan to reopen two controversial detention centres at Campsfield and Haslar.

We’re deeply disappointed that this government is pursuing policies that put people’s welfare and rights at such serious risk.

It’s especially concerning so soon after the recent anti-immigrant riots. But we know this doesn’t reflect what most British people stand for.

Building more detention centres to lock up more people is not a solution. More than 50% of people detained by the Home Office last year were later released back into the community. Such unnecessary detention only harms those people and their families.

With its new proposals, the government is in danger of continuing this cruelty and injustice, when it could take a different, more humane approach to immigration.

A man currently in detention - who is being supported by Detention Action - shared his experiences in an interview with Channel 4 News:

People are killing themselves. People are hurting themselves, cutting themselves. You know, starving themselves, not eating at all. It’s just the mental side of it, of not knowing how long more. You’re not allowed to work. Your life is going to be wasted. You’re just stuck.”

At Detention Action, we continue to campaign for a 28 day time limit on detention and the use of judicial oversight over decisions to detain people. This would significantly reduce the harm of immigration detention and prevent the Home Office from holding people unjustly.

We need these reforms to protect people.

To show your support, please sign and share our pledge to back a 28-day time limit.

With thanks,

James
