Highly-paid PTV Anchors having something other than ratings or qualification

Dear all,

Anchors of private television channels command fabulous salaries proportionate to the ratings they earn for their channel. But it seems that those working for the state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) have to worry about something other than ratings or qualification. Dawn says.

That could be the only explanation for a PTV anchor, whose graduation degree is suspect, if not worse, and he is still earning Rs300,000 per month while his better educated colleagues are being paid about one-tenth of that amount.

And this glaring disparity is official.

Information Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan however defended the disparity as she told Dawn “These appointments are made by the PTV’s board of directors, headed by the managing director (MD), on the basis of market value of individuals and not educational qualification alone and that the minister has nothing to do with these appointments”.

The information provided by her in a written reply under “unstirred questions” during question hour in the National Assembly on Friday was however stunning. Most of these appointments, according to the PTV’s old staffers were made on political grounds and not merit and there was serious resentment among them on this question.

MNA Maulvi Agha Mohammad had sought the detail of PTV anchors along with their qualification and perks.

The minister’s reply revealed that Shoaib Bhutta whose BA degree was marked with the words “confirmation awaited”, is

earning a handsome monthly package of Rs300,000 a month whereas the lowest salary-getting individual, Rafique Ghauri, with qualification of masters (MA) is anchoring the programme ‘Pakistan ban raha tha’ and gets only Rs31,571 a month.

According to details, Dr Moeed Pirzada who holds an MSc degree from Columbia University and MSc from London School of Economics along with an MBBS degree, and has switched over from a private channel, is doing a programme thrice a week and is getting Rs750,000. Syed Anwarul Hassan hailing from Kohat, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) is receiving Rs 335,000 per month with his masters in journalism degree from Gomal University.

Other anchors include Samina Waqar who (according to written reply was not doing any job at all) receives Rs 125,000 per month. Saadia Afzaal, a BA degree holder is getting Rs360,000. Waheed Hussain with masters in mass communication, master in English and MPhil degree receives Rs325,000. Khanum Tayyeba Bokhari with MA Arabic, MA Persian and MA Islamic Studies degrees (who anchors a programme special to a certain sect) gets Rs375,000. Noorul Haris who comes from Sindh with CA (Inter) degree receives Rs300,000. Mazhar Barlas with MSc mass communication and MA Urdu gets Rs250,000.

Khursheed Nadeem holding MA Political Science degree earns Rs175,000. Azam Khalil with MA English and a degree in speech writing who does only four programmes in a month is getting Rs200,000 plus Rs50,000 a month for extra

programmes and Shakeel Gilani with LLB and MSc mass communication degree is earning Rs150,000 per month.

Other anchors with smaller emoluments include; Imran Mir – Rs74,000; Tanzeela Mazhar – Rs70,000; Tarangil Singh  holding CAT,BA,ACCA degrees gets Rs68,000 and Saifullah Khan, a BSc degree holder is getting Rs30,000 per month.

Background interviews revealed that most of the above mentioned highly paid anchors, in fact, are having strong political cults working more than their qualification and ratings for their selection.

Actuly PTV is facing worst kind of Corruption these days and such appointments are part of this ongoing corruption, Minsiter for information and Broadcast her self is part of all kinds of corruption including Secy information TAIMOUR AZMAT and YBM. who says Moeed Pirzada has worth of Rs750000 , WAHEED HUSAIN was geting just 50000/ when he was fired from waqt tv , and tell em if Mazher Barlas , Shoaib Bhuta , ASMAT MASHWANI , AZAM KHALIL , Tanzila qualified to be anchor. YBM is getting share from these salries and he is minting from the declining ravenue of PTV as share of 3 percnet  . even Chaudhry of Gujrat are part of this corruption they forced to made Khalid Warraich who is BA third division and has been posted as Director of news , Asad Jaspa again BA third Division and have made Dierctor PTV academy and one day be made Diector adminsitartion as earlier he was keeping the post . YBM is also making money from developmnet of logos and promos from out side market ,

I dont know why Cheif justice is not taking sou moto of this necked corruption as PTV is being run on public taxes which are being taken in shape of TV license fee ....

I have received a number of phone calls from PTV staffers including aggrieved anchors who feel deprived of their fair share in the state run channel when every tom and harry is making hay. Minister information justifies these appointments and tries to escape the wrath by putting blame on YBM who has his own cult. There are stories of moral as well as financial corruption attached to the PtV bosses and no one knows where is the end. But more serious is the aspect of the resources which are collected from the hard earned income of lower classes in shape of 'jagga tax' in their electricity bills. Question is why everyone is charged for a channel which isw seldom viewed in most of urban areas of the contry as people have adopted to the private channels screens after cable coming to fill the gap. The people of Paksitan need to raise their voice against this injustice as the money collected from them is wasted in providing illegal and immoral perks to the rulers and their favourites. This campaign need to be run across the country now.

with all the respect to RAJPUT SAHAB , every country have its own state run tv but with the indpendant board and evry country have TV license fee but properly utilised and aoudited. howevr here in Pak person like YBM and Taimour Azmat Firdouse Ashiq Awan have ruined PTV even QAMAR Zaman Kaira had his share . now YBM is making money for his Capital TV which would shorly be launched , and the real owner of this channel is RAIZ SHAIKH and and mr 10 percent ,

yes there are issues of Moral coruption too, female anchors and employees are being harassed by YBM, Asharf Malkham, Mohsin Gorya(both front men of Taimour Azmat) and they are being forced to compromise, or resign from the job .....

Some information, I guess, has been withheld from public eye. There are PTV anchors not mentioned in the information transmitted to the Parliament, a criminal act indeed. Among them are Khushnood Khan, Naeem Bokhari, Ramiz Raja, Dr. Nauman Niaz and others.

A text message I received is quite instructive:"Farrukh Goindi (100K) , Yashfeen Jamal (was getting 35 K from Waqt TV, now getting 150k) Naeem Bukhari (gets 50 K per program) Khushnood (drawing salary with out any program), Ramiz Raja (600K), Dr. Nauman Niaz"

Not a bad idea if they are competant and PTV can encash their names commercially,why not.This is a brand new market for branded anchores they should get more if PTV can generate more revenue by branded names. things were right and no one dares to say anything about him and now
all fingers are raised against him. On the other hand if YBM again
join a private channel then how many people will oppose him. Beside

Facts revealed so far and those still hidden are really astonishing. The "handsome" amounts we are getting overseas while working with Pakistani media organisations are really shameful. Even the least educated was graduated in 80's with some foriegn education as well. I remember senior journalists like Dr. Moeed and Amir Ghouri were ruining there careers in UK and not getting as much salaries but they are happy in Pakistan now. But this shows Mr Zardari's slogan works "PAKISTAN KHAPPE"

When some one works in pvt channel then he gets salary from a person or a company but when some works in state run channel he gets salary from public money. Tax payers have the right to speak those who r not doing justice with their jobs n getting a lot.

There's  a strong  mafia in PTV composed of  Director Admin . Personal And Controller Admin , Deputy controller  admin and others  who have distributed the quotas of vacant jobs  of News Reporters. assistant producers and some other technical jobs in PTV.   These People are Selling Jobs on Fixed rates . They Don't Produce the appointment letters of the pending cases of appointments recommended by MD PTV .until a person whose case is struck reach them and pay them for his job.

While these blue eyed boys, mentioned in Ahmed Hassan sahib's story, are getting hefty salaries incompatible with their qualifications and abilities, the producers appointed by PTV authorities strictly in accordance with the laid down criteria for their placement at AJK TV,  launched by PTV some eight years ago with great fanfare, are awaiting their regularisation ever since.  

The PTV bosses cite resource constraints but I wonder why these so called limitations do not hinder payment on their part of hundreds of thousands of rupees per month to simple graduates and in some cases under graduates. 

I have done many stories to highlight the plight of staff working in AJKTV, but to no avail.

A parahi proverb with a minor amendment is befitting for this situation. "اس ملک میں کسی کا تیل بھی نہیں جلتا اور کسی کا پانی بھی جل جاتاہے"

He's been one of the strongest critics of YBM but remember, criticize one based on his bad deeds but commend one on his good ones.

Mr sib Nawab is Beneficiary of every PTV MD, insider of PTV tells that recently patch with MD nad Minsiter , is just because ms firdouse ashiq will accommodate more anchor and some from her constituancy on high packages. PTV have its ragular DMD mr Mustafa Mandokhail m despite this Mr Hamad Ghaznavi hired as  another DMD who do nothing but recieves just 6 lakhs, and ragular DMD have been sidelined and posted as GM Karachi. ab to MOlana Abu Bakar Ghaznavi ki roh bhi trap rahi hogi as he is son of molna sahab, and manage job via DMS president.
