I've just started using REAPER and I'm not quite sure how to record the virtual MIDI keyboard. I've got it connected to a VST instrument and the recording arm is on, but I don't know where to proceed from there. Big up to any people who can help me with this.

I don't have a proper MIDI keyboard yet so I'm relying on virtual stuff. I just started playing around with some plugins and everything is working great, except for the virtual MIDI keyboard. The piano roll works perfectly, but no matter what I do I can't get the virtual keyboard to do anything. I've changed every MIDI input and channel setting I can find, but they don't do anything. What should I do?

ok, regardless how Animoog behaves ,this is the setting you must use (Record Output 'Midi') , if you want to record the plugin's midi output
(you mentioned earlier all but no 'output' option ,that's why I though it was Reaper's bug)
if the midi file is empty ,then it's Animoog bug unfortunately
Maybe Animoog as AU has a setting to send to specific midi port and try to capture midi from that port (I guess OSX has loopback option for virtual midi port that echos the input to output)

Can you change the midi channel of your midi keyboard? When using Halion standalone midi channel does matter. Your loaded program is set to channel 1. If your midi keyboard sends midi data on other channel it will not play.

I have an Akai MPK49 keyboard controller. It works fine in Reaper for controlling VSTis and other settings. It also works fine in Renoise, when it is NOT running as a ReWire slave, by selecting the keyboard as the midi device.

From how it sounds, it sounds like the virtual MIDI keyboard will automatically receive input from your computer keyboard. I haven't used Reaper personally, so I apologize if these instructions aren't exact, but the process is pretty similar across most DAWs.

On Windows you can use virtual MIDI ports which perform the same functionality as the built-in IAC ports on a Mac. That way you would record your performance using your daw but just set the output MIDI port to a virtual MIDI port. Then you can have Gig Performer receive those MIDI events and pass them into your synth blocks just as if you were directly using a MIDI keyboard device.

I have just installed Reaper today, I loaded a vsti and selected my midi keyboard but no sound was coming out of it when I played but when I pressed record and listened to what was recorded I could hear the music. I noticed that there was a "Record monitoring" button (see the pictures below). I clicked it, pressed a key and I was able to hear what I was playing.

Let me tell you something: if you just want to test a DAW, use the mouse and paint notes in the piano roll. It is a much more appropriate method. Anyway, if having the virtual PC keyboard input will determine if a DAW is a looser or not in your opinion, I must say you will simply not be able to appreciate what Podium has to offer. Indeed, why not look to something else?
