A multicultural regional centre, Suva, the Capital of Fiji, is the largest and the most cosmopolitan city of the island country. Damodar Group, which began way back in 1930s with textiles export-import business, moved to Suva in 1950. That's when the business of cinema began thriving. By 1962, cinema business became the core operation of Damodar Group. In 1996, Dayanand Damodar had the foresight to embrace revolutionary changes in the cinema industry, which led to the setting up of Village 6 Cinema Complex in Suva.

In tune with the developments world over, Damodar Group reviewed their business strategy and soon realised that cinema business will have to be packaged as part of a complete retailing experience -- shopping, dining, film viewing, gaming etc. Hence, the Damodar City Centre concept was born.

The $30 million Damodar City Centre, which started construction in 2011, became a reality after the formation of the London Guarantee Corporation Limited, which is a joint venture partnership between Damodar Group Chairman
Dayanand Damodar and Alistair Hutchison. The new multiplex at Damodar City Centre mall was launched officially on 12 December, 2013 (along with the opening of the mall on the same day) by the Prime Minister of Fiji Ratu Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama. Two of the most-awaited films Hobbit 2: The Desolation Of Smaug and Dhoom 3 were screened on the occasion. Damodar City Centre features restaurants, supermarket, retail shops, amusement centres, coffee shop and food court.

The new multiplex at Damodar City Centre has 4 cinemas, each having an exclusive concept. These 4 cinemas are Vmax, 2 Standard Cinemas and Premium Cinema. Vmax Cinema is Fiji's largest cinema screen with state-of-the-art surround sound technology. The Cinema complex also has a foyer and "Cinelounge" (Premium Lounge).

"Damodar City Centre opened with newest digital technology which is available to all the cinemas around the world and now in Fiji. Equipment's such as Barco 4k projectors, JBL surround systems, Theatre Management Systems to make operations faster and easier. Users curved screen technology with Perlex screens houses the largest Vmax Screen in the South Pacific i.e over 22mts in width and 9mts in height. Vmax houses 367 seats that is the largest cinema seating in Fiji currently and has rocker seats. Vmax does not only have a curved screen but also has a curved seating arrangement to enhance maximum viewing experience from any seat. Damodar City Centre also houses a Premium Cinema where people are able to experience movies in luxury with table and bar service attached to a Cine-Lounge that is open to all cinema patrons. Damodar City Centre that houses Damodar Event Cinemas newest multiplex provided the public of Suva the luxury of enjoying movies with tiered seating, mega screen, mega sound and Premium viewing experience for the first time ever in Fiji," informs Madhu Singh, General Manager, Damodar Event Cinemas.

Madhu Singh attributes the success of the Cinemas to its "State of the art facility; ideal for Corporate Events with the new media technology and away from the rush of the city in a Shopping Complex. With Facilities like Vmax and Premium Cinema, and Cine Lounge that no other Cinema Houses."

The recognition is the result of the comprehensive improvements made to the auditoriums and services offered at Village Cinemas at The Mall Athens, including the introduction of the world's first Sphera auditorium, exclusively showcased for the first time in our country.
