MyWD Smartware external hard drive won't open the DriveUnlock for My Book Elite. My MAC states this WD needs to update it's driver in order to operate with Monterey 12.6. but I can't find any driver for this external hard drive. I have tons of pics stored and can't access it.

Assuming this enables you to unlock the drive, immediately copy all content to another drive for safekeeping, a drive that is not utilized with any WD tools. A drive that you have formatted in HFS+ or APFS format (GUID) using Apple's Disk utility and nothing else.

Then, once your files are safe, uninstall completely all WD utilities and software, using an uninstaller from WD. Then with Apple's Disk Utility, erase/format the problem drive with APFS or HFS+ format. Stay away in the future from all third party disk tools and security software. Apple's Disk Utility and FileVault (for password protected encryption) provides rock solid security and is all you need.

I recently got a Western Digital MyBook external hard drive to enable Time Machine. It has its software installed on a "virtual CD" called "WD SmartWare" which shows up on the desktop any time the drive is plugged in. Since I will use this virtual drive only very rarely, how can I hide it from the desktop, while allowing other CDs to show up?

but VCD didn't work until I changed the security preferences, which I had to do with the smartware to get rid of the password. Then after VCD worked, the My Book was still read only, so I used the smartware which was still installed to erase everything already on the drive, and then it finally worked like an external hard drive is supposed to and was read and writable (and then I deleted the smartware software I had installed on my computer)

I just plugged it in to one of my system. Then I booted that system up to an Xp install CD and then when given the option from the CD as to what hard-drive I wanted to install to I chose the MyBook and deleted the partition and then formatted it using the Install cd. Once tha formatting was done, I then canceled the CD boot and restarted my system. Now I have a clean MyBook with nothing on it at all, just like the darn thing is supposed to be.

Second, on Linux, I ran palimpsest (a disk management utility w/ a GUI) removed all visible partitions and chose Format drive -> Master Boot Record -> BSD. I then chose Format drive->don't partition.

You have to copy it to your hard drive to run it (otherwise, it gives you an error message saying as much), and once you've done that, you just run it and follow the prompts. Each time you go through the process, it will alternate between being visible and being hidden.

Note: This software is the same software that you can download as mentioned in other answers... In this answer, I'm just pointing out that a version of it (though presumably it may not be the latest version, and therefore you may want to download it) exists on the "virtual CD" already, which you can copy and run.

I recently buy WD Mybook Essential HDD 1 TB. I downloaded and install Smartware software in both my desktop (Windows XP) and laptop (Windows 7) but in both case the software is not able to detect the external hard disc. It shows desktop/laptop (Whichever is apt) on left hand side of software but not the hard drive on right side. Why so?

Update: It requires power and so I gave it. It is properly connected with USB. Its ON and shows LED also. It opens in Windows Explorer as well. When clicked it shows the contents inside on the drive too. Any more info needed from my side?

Make sure the MyBook is plugged in to an external power supply. Do you know for sure that it's powered on?I say this because there are 2.5" external drives that don't require power, but your 1TB drive almost certainly does.

If it has power and you're sure it's turning on (LEDs?), check if it shows up in Windows Explorer, as Harry says. If not, are you getting any indication that something is being plugged in to the USB bus? Usually you get an audio cue and a brief indication in the system tray (bottom right corner) that something has been connected.

WD SmartWare is a program that automatically backs up photos, music, video and data files to an external hard drive. You can schedule backups for when your computer is idle or choose automatic, continuous backup to instantly save files when they are added or saved.

Did you ever face no writable WD SmartWare partition found problem? This problem may make you unable to access your WD external hard drive and data. Fortunately, you can fix this problem through the solutions in this post.

You may be familiar with WD SmartWare if you own a Western Digital external hard drive. You may like to buy an external hard drive to back up your files because the internal hard drive space is limited.

Some WD external hard drives come with WD Smartware backup software. You can back up files without installing this software on Windows or Mac. You can disable its backup feature if you just need an ordinary external hard drive. Surely, you can also install WD Smartware on computer to activate its backup feature if your WD hard drive is not mounted with this software.

WD SmartWare is an application that enables you to automatically protect your data through continuous or scheduled backups. If your files on computer are corrupted or lost, you can recover them from WD external hard drive.

This application supports Windows Vista and 7/8/10 operating systems. Besides, it supports most types of WD hard drives except for new My Passport, new My Book, and 8TB My Book drives with 8 character serial numbers (these devices should use WD Backup software).

Many of you may use this piece of software to back up important files automatically and regularly into WD external hard drive to ensure data security. However, some users report that they have encountered no writable WD SmartWare partition found problem.

This problem makes users unable to access their WD external hard drives and data. Some people may have stored many important and valuable files in WD external hard drive and the original files are corrupted unfortunately. If so, they may suffer huge losses.

If you can still find the original WD SmartWare partition in Disk Management, this is a piece of good news for you. That means you have possibility of repairing it well by using software instead of replacing hardware. Hardware repairing is more expensive and complicated than software repairing.

Sometimes, WD no writable partition found problem may be just caused by the absence of drive letter. If a partition has no drive letter, it will not be displayed in WD SmartWare. Some users report that they have fixed this problem by assigning drive letter.

How to check the no writable partition found WD SmartWare problem is caused by the absence of drive letter? If you open Disk Management and you find the original WD external hard drive partition is blue without a capital letter, you can confirm it. Then, you can assign a new one to the partition to solve this problem.

A new drive letter will be automatically assigned to the partition after you click OK to save the changes. And then, you can launch WD Smartware to see whether the no writable WD SmartWare partition found problem is solved.

If so, you just need to open Disk Management and right-click on the unallocated space to choose New Simple Volume. Then, you can follow the wizard to complete partition creation. Please note the file system choice: NTFS or FAT32 file system for Windows and HFS+ file system for Mac.

Besides, WD SmartWare supports NTFS and FAT32 file systems for Windows and HFS+ file system for Mac. If you have switched between Windows and Mac, no writable WD SmartWare partition found problem will also happen. Then, you still need to reformat the partition.

I am a beginner in Ubuntu. And I have just installed Ubuntu 11.10 in my Dell laptop. When I plugged my WD external hard drive in, it read the first time, but since I have a unlock.exe file (password for the hard drive). So I installed Wine to read it. But it gives me an error. I restart the machine, and plugged the hard drive in again. And it is not recognized anymore. Can anybody help me, please?

WD Passport needs to be unlocked using Windows or Mac before they can be used. Take the drive to a Mac or PC and run the Unlock application or the WD Smartware Utilities to enable access to the writable partition, then format it. If the drive is missing the unlocking apps, you can download the software kit for Mac and PC from WD's support pages.

In an extreme situation you can use -tools.com/products/rrs/howto/ I don't know if they can be trusted. As you can see HDDs could be simply unlocked using these tools, so to be safe encrypt your data yourself before storing it on your drive.

First you have to disable the unlock.exe while you're in windows. Use the WD smartware program (you can dl it from their website), go to settings, enter your passoword, choose "remove security," and then update settings. Now it doesn't have a password anymore, so you should at least be able to mount and access it in linux.

As far as it concerns a pure ubuntu solution, there is an interesting how to for removing the security functionality of WD MyPassport hard drive on ubuntu using hdparm and the master password 'WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCW', which could differ for various models.

It could be a simple refresh to show the F: in Disk Management also, but I just want to let you confirm that the F: is indeed the 2TB volume. Otherwise you need to assign a drive letter. You could also try to remove the drive letter and add it again!

I would first try to mark disk1 inactive or even go as far to clean disk1 completely via the diskpart command environment. Then initialize, partition and format again from Disk Management. Carefully!!

WD SmartWare by Western Digital is a backup and recovery software application that provides users with an intuitive and automated way to protect their important data. With its user-friendly interface and comprehensive features, WD SmartWare offers users a reliable solution for safeguarding their files, documents, and media with ease.
