Group,

Happy new year to you all!  Now that it is January, I think it's a good idea to check in and see how Lincoln is treating everyone. I know these are some long-ass books, and I'm wondering if most of us are managing to get through them despite our busy lives.

Will people please respond to this, either privately or publicly, with what book you are reading and how far you are in it?  All I really need is an estimate on when you think you will be ready to meet.  If people are in good shape, I'll try and schedule one for the end of the month, but I'm open to extending it until February if people need more time.

Also, I have been getting an itch to watch the Ken Burns Civil War documentary.  I'm reading the Donald book and am right in the midst of the war section.  The book is so top-level focused, I'm really craving more information about what the war was like for the individuals who fought in it or otherwise lived through it.  Would anyone be interested in coming over to my house to watch an episode or two, maybe once a week for a few weeks?  I can provide popcorn and beer, and I believe our television is sufficiently large (although a recent trip to Costco made me briefly question that belief).

In sum:

1) Happy new year!
2) Please tell me if you can finish the book in time for a late January meeting or if you want more time (and also what book you're reading, just because I'm curious)
3) Would you like to watch the Ken Burns thing and if so, which nights are good for you?

Thanks for your cooperation and I look forward to hearing from all of you!

Hi, Fellow PBBCistas --

Happy New Year!

My check in: I have finished the Donald book, and I agree with Shosh that it doesn't deal with the war in enough detail -- especially the pivotal battles like Gettysburg. So yes, I would be very interested in re-viewing the Ken Burns series. For those who haven't yet seen it -- be warned that (the entire series) is very long and that it will break your heart. Maybe we don't need to view every episode.

Since I've finished the book, I can meet any time. But Lincoln's birthday, of course, is February 12....

See yo soon!
Sally

Hey All,

I've finished the Team of Rivals book and that is likely all I will read. It was FASCINATING and I can't wait to talk about it. I'm interested in rewatching Civil War. Also, I never saw Lincoln when it came out. I plan to see that before we meet up.

Mom, that is a very good point!  You guys want to have a special President's Day weekend edition of the book club?  That would be Saturday 2/15 or Sunday 2/16.  Can anyone not make either or both of those dates?

As before, if shit gets complicated, I'll make one of those things where we all vote on specific times.

For Ken Burns viewers, how are Monday nights for you?  Or do you prefer Tuesdays?

Either date should work for me and Tuesdays are better for me for Burns watching but don't schedule around me since I won't be able to make many viewings.

Presidents Day Weekend is good for me. I would prefer Saturday the 15th over Sunday the 16th.
