Dear President K.G.

This is a great idea and something very close to my heart. Unfortunately, on that day, I may not be able do make it to the competition as my family and I will be returning from JB,  late, after attending my grandniece’s wedding.

If I may, I would like to explore with you the possibility of staging an art exhibition in the name of charity.

Art is my favourite hobby even before I went to school. Now, 65 years later, I am still taking art classes to do Chinese brush painting.

I have attended one art exhibition a few years ago in the name of RC for charity. That has always stuck in my mind.

We will be staging our next extinction of our art master and his students, all adults, by the end of this year. Venue, tentatively, the KL Central Art Market. If for charity we may able to  get some  complex for free or for a nominal  fee.

I suggested to do it in the name of charity. The proceeds may be split between the artists and charity. The fears are:

1. Difficulty in getting someone to get the people to come and buy the pieces.

2. No one to manage the whole exhibition.

With your experience, I am sure you have the ability  to manage this exhibition.

Our contribution will roughly be: 1. supply all the art pieces; 2. Arrange and, at the end, remove the exhibits; 3. have members to do the duty roster for  manning the place during the exhibition.

Please let me know if you are willing to co-operate with us in this project.

Yours in Rotary,

Jack Lim

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

October, dedicated to Vocational Service, is coming to an end and what an eventful month it has been to the Rotary Club of Alor Star. The handing over of a fire engine to a voluntary Fire station tomorrow (22nd October) and the giving away of 100 spectacles to poor rural students with bad vision on Sunday (23rd October) will be two other great events of the club this month.
The Honorable Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Wira Chor Chee Heung will be present at the Fire Engine handing over ceremony at the Kilang Tebu Voluntary Fire Station in Alor Setar and this has brought a lot of media attention.  The Fire Engine was presented to the RCAS by their sister club in Kawachinagano , Osaka, Japan.
Earlier this year we presented another fire engine, also courtesy of our sister club in Japan, to a voluntary Fire Station in Kuala Kedah which is 14km away from Alor Setar.
The RCAS started the month with the handing over of USD5000 to the Myanmar earthquake victim fund in Techlick, a sleepy town in the southern most tip of the country. Three Rotarians from the club went to make the presentation which was well received by the local people there. It is part of the club's international project .
The club also honored three individuals for their exemplary service in their vocation at their weekly meeting last Sunday. Ag Dr G.Baskaran was present to witness the event.
RM7000 will be spent for the spectacles and this project is carried out in conjunction with World's Sights Day which was on October 13.
I must thank my dedicated members and the support given by the energetic AG which enabled the club to carry out the desired charitable projects this month.
Lastly November 18 is our Installation Night at the Star City hotel in Alor Setar and our DG Dr Raveendra Kumar and Dr Indrabai will grace the occassion .
I sincerely hope that the other clubs, especially those from the North, will support us.

HAPPY DEEPAVALI TO ALL HINDU MEMBERS OF THE ROTARY  FRATERNITY .

Hello Francois,

Great to hear from you again and I trust everything is going well for you and your team. To be honest we have been desperately trying to get back to Pinang, my God daughter Cathy Robinson and her husband Rob had a (1 year delayed) honeymoon with you about 4 weeks back and I could not even make it for that!!! I was stuck in Pakistan of all places - the things we do for business development.

Anyway they had a great time and travelled onto the F1 in Singapore.

Thank you indeed for the invitation, which, if we were not involved in a Clean Water project in Vietnam, would have been a definite yes, and the Park Royal is such a great place to stay.

Let me circulate it to all club members as I am sure we have a few Jazz aficionado's amongst us that may not be coming to Siem Reap.

May we at Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise wish you all a very best and a truly successful event.

Very best regards,

Steve Robinson.

PENANG ISLAND JAZZ FESTIVAL 2012 “Jazz With A HEART” Charity Dinner

As part of the Penang Island Jazz Festival’s fundraising efforts for the year, the “Jazz With A HEART” Charity Dinner on Friday, 30th November 2012 at the Grand Ballroom of the Bayview Beach Resort will be hosted by the Penang Rotary Club.  The Charity Dinner is being organized in conjunction with the Penang Island Jazz Festival 2012 which will be held in Penang from the 29th November to 2nd December 2012. Charity being one of the key areas of the Festival, this Charity Dinner will be hosted in aid of selected charitable organizations identified and selected by thePenang Rotary Club.

A.            ENTERTAINMENT

Entertainment for the night will be provided by:

1.            ELVIRA ARUL & THE ACOUSTIC SOULS

While soulful best describes Elvira Arul, the songstress, is as they say “a lady with a voice like no other”. This bubbly lass comes with a lethal combination of the 5P’s - power, passion, pizzazz, personality and panache. Seen about town dabbling in various genres and paying tribute to childhood idols, she might possibly have finally found her element. Singing her way in to the hearts of audiences over the years, this storyteller has been known calm the troubled mind, easing the burdened soul, with the very first note she belts.

This time around you will hear elements of her Soul, Jazz, Rock, and Funk roots showing in every fibre of her being as she takes the stage with newly formed band The Acoustic Souls, with band members on guitar, percussion, violin and cello.

2.            MEZZOTONO (www.mezzotono.it)

Founded in 2004, Mezzotono - (“Small Italian Orchestra Without Instruments”) comprising of Fabio Lepore (tenor), Daniela Desideri (soprano), Francesca Leone (mezzo soprano), Marco Giuliani (baritone) and Andrea Maurelli (bass) have made several prominent Italian television appearances and performed hundreds of concerts in theatres and festivals all over Europe, the Middle East and the Far East.

Mezzotono combines music with culture and the originality of the performance is evident in their repertoire which consists solely of defining Italian music and varies from songs in barese dialect to some classic songs of the Italian tradition sprinkled with some familiar tunes. The musical delivery by these versatile five vocal interpreters often portrays a very different impact from the original version because of the unpredictable and sometimes comical approach in their own musical arrangement and style.

3.            ESTUDIANTINA ENSEMBLE (http://www.estudiantinaensemble.nl/ja/)

The Estudiantina Ensemble was founded by leader/guitarist/vocals Ricardo Bekema in 2001, with the objective of maintaining the authentic Cuban Traditional Guaracha, Bolero, Danzón and Son styles that were performed by estudiantina groups that were popular in the eastern region of Cuba during the late 19th century.

In 2007, the ensemble received an invitation from Buena Vista Social Club-member Eliades Ochoa to play on the legendary stages of the prestigious 'Festival de la Trova Pepe Sanchez' in Santiago de Cuba and since then have performed in many festivals all over the world. Other members of the group include Eric "Derecho de Nacer" Wijngaarde - percusion menor/vocals, Carlos Francinet - percusion menor/vocals,  Alexander Rodriguez Cala – trumpet, Marcos Antonio Betancourt Ramírez - baroque timpani (pailas criollas), Leo "Pantaléon" Martis - tres (segundo),  Ernesto Paz Rivero - double bass and Anurakt Scheepers - tres (primero).
