Toget a high TOEFL score, you need to have a high range of English vocabulary. Knowing different words allows you to more readily understand the English you read and hear and gives you the tools to express yourself more effectively in speech and writing.

A good way to study vocabulary is to use flashcards. You can either make your own paper cards or opt for digital cards. Anki is a free computer program you can use to create, download, and practise flashcards.

For some fun ways to work on vocabulary and grammar, check out our Everyday English podcast designed by expert TOEFL teachers at E2. If you want to improve your grammar, vocabulary, and even pronunciation in a fun and interactive way, this podcast is for you! Take a listen today.

Youre probably wondering how you can identify the weaknesses that may cause you to lose your TOEFL score. First, check your Reading and Listening answers in detail. After all, we learn from our mistakes. Consider the following important questions:

TOEFL practice tests are useful to help you improve your TOEFL score, however, this will only happen if you analyse your mistakes carefully, comparing your answer with the correct answer to understand what went wrong.

You may have made a mistake because of a particular word or phrase, which means you should dedicate more time to work on expanding your vocabulary. You may have misunderstood information, which is related to verb tense, or you missed a key detail such as the conjunction connecting ideas. For Listening, if you cannot keep up with the speed of the recording and the amount of information, it means you need more practice listening to authentic English material.

There are 2 counters arranged but few students names are completely missing from all the lists at both counters. Then the fear factor in me alarmed and I started running to both the counters checked twice in all the lists in heavy competition (with students who all are missing their names) and the time was already 11:00 am.

My frustration also influenced the next (writing) section and stepped out of exam center very soon leaving the exam center with lot of frustration. I thought of giving her a tight slap but just controlled my nerve.

So friends I would like to request everyone not to panic at the exam centers. Because it affects not only your performance but it may also affect other performance and some times you may face embarrassing situations like someone coming to you pointing on your behavior.

Hi,

I took my GRE on 29th December, 2011, at Prometric center Gurgaon. Every thing was going fine till the 10 min break. After the break I asked the invigilator to provide me with the scratch papers. To my surprise the guy told me to first finish the remaining last page of my previous scratch booklet, before he replenish it with the new one. It was really irritating.

I carried on with my exam hoping that it would not be hectic to ask for the scratch papers in the middle of the section I was working on, as it was mentioned in the instructions, also told by the invigilator to just raise your sheet and they will replace it.

The invigilators were not there only in the exam room, nor were they sitting on there desk to observe the camera screens. I raised my hand continuously for 4-5 mins. No one came, I wanted to go out but thought it would be a waste of time and may be the breach of rules. I got totally frustrated and lost all my focus and thus ended up in the worst maths section which got reflected in my scores.

The difference between the quality of the Prometric GRE centres and Prometric TOEFL centres is appalling! The TOEFL experience seems to be the same for most people. Main problems being that

1. Some retarded students believe shouting into the mike is somehow better than speaking in their normal voice.

2. There is no adequate privacy to protect from such a situation, unlike the GRE where each person has their own private 3-walled cubicle with sound proof headphones.

3. Everyone sitting elbow-to-elbow completes the test at approximately the same rate, so that everyone starts their speaking section at the same time! AND we all get the exact same questions to answer. It is unbelievably distracting to speak impromptu when someone next to you is speaking about the very same thing. and YES students merrily borrow points from their neighbors in the speaking section. Its weird just how easy it is to cheat ! Im shocked Prometric couldnt predict such a scenario, really, its not that hard.

In my opinion i made a gazillion mistakes in the speaking section, and was kinda expecting a 100-110.. but miraculously i got a 117. So despite the crappy 3rd world test centers, it somehow is still possible to score well.

Finally my (the one who attracted me with her LOUD voice) affected my listening & speaking scores and I ended-up scoring only 83 to my luck. Now I should take it as an experience or exposure or a lesson may be and re-take the TOEFL. I may run to Chennai this time where things are organized as one of our friends shared his experience in Chennai (Ashok Nagar) testing center.

My toefl exam was on 3rd December. There was a funny incidence. The student sitting behind me started his listening section 25 seconds before I started my speaking section, Funny thing was that I got same questions. So that was my bad luck . If I had started my test after a little bit delay than I will get to know all questions in advance. guys I think that approximately all students giving test at same time will get same questions.

The same thing happened with me. We were around 10 students giving our TOEFL in a small cramped room.

Everyone began their speaking section at the same time (may be at a difference or 2-3 minutes).

As a result, there was so much noise and it was difficult to concentrate on reading or listening which accompanies the speaking section.

In order to not be left behind, everyone ensured all thier voices were louder than another and there was a total confusion.

On complaining to the invigilators, they told the loud students to lower their voice but it lasted only for the next 1-2 minutes.

It was a very bad experience and prometric/ETS should definitely take some action and improve the condition.

Luckily I didnt score as bad as I thought I would.

If, after taking a TOEFL practice test, you discover that your TOEFL score does not meet the minimum score requirement for your school, you can use Magoosh TOEFL Prep to improve your skills and increase your score. (Our free trial is a good place to start.)

Sometimes a school will offer special benefits or opportunities if your TOEFL score exceeds the minimum. For example, if you are trying for admission to a top graduate school, the minimum score might be 90. However, in order to get a TA (a teaching assistantship), your minimum speaking score might be 26, or you might need a 100 on the TOEFL overall. If you are hoping for special on-campus work opportunities, check to see if there are separate, higher TOEFL requirements.

TOEFL iBT score ranges are commonly set by conditional acceptance programs. These kinds of programs allow lower-scoring TOEFL test-takers to still be accepted. But conditionally accepted students have to take some ESL courses before they can start their regular degree.

And there are still other universities that set a score range for fully accepted students. This is less common. But you will see ranges, rather than just a set minimum TOEFL score, at some highly competitive universities.

As you can see above, the licensure for physicians and nurses is different in every state. For examples of some of these differences and more information about the TOEFL requirements for healthcare work, see my full article on TOEFL for medical professionals.

Less than 80: This is generally not a good TOEFL iBT score. If you below on 80 on the TOEFL, it will be hard to get into an English language university, unless you go for conditional acceptance. However, some small public universities in the US will accept TOEFL scores below 80. And English degree programs in non-English speaking countries also sometimes may accept scores in this not-so-good range.

90-100: TOEFL scores in this range are perfectly good. At this level, your TOEFL score is good enough for most universities. With these TOEFL scores, you also have a shot at getting a position as an RA, TA, or GA on campus.

This also means that even though your score on the first exam was 100 and your score on the second exam alone would be 103, your MyBest score report would show a total score of 105, using your best scores from each.

Hello Kate,

My GRE score which i had given 2 years back is 307 (161 Quant and 146 Verbal). Since then, I am working for Microsoft and interact daily with US citizens. I am fairly good at speaking now but I think challenges for me could be reading and writing. I am planning for Fall 2014 and my TOEFL date is 1st of March. Any comments what should I do?

That said, most students study for between one and six months. But I have had students who have studied for two years and others who only studied for a couple weeks! Again, it really depends on what you personally need.

Hi, I am a senior high school student and plan on taking the TOEFL test, yet i am not sure of the requirements. I read in one of the university requirements that you needed to be studying atleast 4 years in Canada. But I am not sure if it means consecutively or in total 4 years. It would be great if you could reply.
