Carnegie Libraries Across America

Our new interactive map based on historical data makes it possible for Americans to learn more about the Carnegie Libraries in their communities.

Search your zip code to find one near you, and learn more about how philanthropic gifts by Andrew Carnegie, beginning in 1886, helped launch the public library movement in the United States.

Carnegie believed that access to a free public library provided ladders “upon which the aspiring may climb” and was the best gift that could be given to a community. Today our foundation, which he established in 1911, continues his library legacy. Learn more.

Hi Katrina,
Thanks for sharing this. We have a Carnegie Library in Stockton, and we had a special program and celebration when it was 100 years old.
