Greetings All,

Here in Steamboat Springs members of the preservation community have watched with alarm the recent trend to remove healthy character-defining mature trees (Englemann spruce, blue spruce, etc.) from lots in our historic Old Town.  Property owners seek to add to existing homes or demolish what is already there, and removing these mature trees allows them to maximize the buildable space on their property. There are no rules in place that currently address this activity.

Are there any examples of what other communities in Colorado have successfully (or not)  done to address/limit removal of healthy historic trees?

I look forward to your suggestions.
Thank you,

Arianthe,

I'm not sure if any Colorado communities have a tree preservation program in place, but you will find similar ordinances in the Deep South. Here is an example from Conway:

https://library.municode.com/sc/conway/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=TIT3PUWO_CH4TRPR

Some communities protect all trees over a certain size or age; others designate historic trees much in the same way as they designate historic properties.

Hello Arianthe’,

The Town of Crested Butte experienced a rash of tree removals in the late 90’s for the reasons you related.  It also has a Tree City USA designation.  In the late 1990’s, a tree ordinance was approved by the Town Council that requires a permit to remove trees that are  4” in diameter or greater, at the two feet from grade.  The permit requires an inspection by the building inspector and recreation director to confirm whether trees are damaged, diseased, too crowded, or simply undesired.   The Permit can require that the property owner replace the removed tree with one or more trees upon the caliper of the tree(s) removed.  Town staff  have enlisted the assistance of the local Forester with greater expertise in the decision process.

Below is the code section and attached is the permit.

Best regards,

Molly

The City of Aspen has a very strong ordinance in place.  I believe you want to talk with Austin Weiss at the Parks Dept. about it.
