I just met with an architect who indicated the owners of a 1956 Moderne style building with painted brick want to sandblast and remove the paint. I thought I had some resources to share with him about exterior paint removal from brick but I can’t seem to find them. The only thing I can find right now is the SOI Rehab Guidelines for Masonry. I would appreciate any resources you might have that I can pass along to the architect to share with the building owner.
Thank you!

Betsy,
Look at Preservation Briefs 6 on the “Dangers of Abrasive Cleaning to Historic Buildings”. Here is the link:

We remove a lot of paint from historic brick. We are, for the most part very successful in doing so and do almost no damage to the brick. This is the toughest thing we do in masonry preservation. It's is a process that can be timely and expensive. I would be happy to discuss our process and even consult with your contractor. Thanks, Terry Alexander , Stonecraft. 970 379 7270

One more thing , we would never recommend any type of sandblasting. It removes the patina or surface of the brick causing great damage. If done properly the paint can be removed and the brick restored back to the it's original form and appearance. Terry
