Now it is being confirmed that the Greenland ice cap is melting very
fast and huge ice blocks of many square kilometers in area are
slipping and falling into the ocean and floating, releasing huge
volumes of fresh water into the ocean. The speed at which they are
moving could increase the chance of the sea water rising to
appreciable level and inundating many islands and coastal areas of
many continents of the world. The rise in sea levels for this century,
predicted by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) was 20
to 60 centimeters, could be surpassed if the melting of the ice
continues at this rate.

In addition to the level of the oceans of the world rising, the polar
bears, the huge mammals inhabiting these artic areas will be severely
affected and many of them will die of the rising water levels and
shrinking their living areas. Also it could affect their hunting
habits as their main prey; the seal will also disappear for the very
same reason. Normally polar bears hunt the seals from the ice which is
used as a platform for hunting the seals. Even the fish Solomon may
change its pattern of going back to its place of origin and also
belongs to one of the food chains of the polar bears. So by the time
the next human generation comes of age there may not be any polar
bears worth their names in the nature but can be seen only in selected
zoos of the world.

Poor creatures falling prey to the scruples man's adventurism,
selfishness, greed and care-for-nothing attitude.
