In India we have two diametrically opposite feelings for rivers. One
is to worship the river as mother and do pooja (Pray) to it. It is
being carried out through out India whether the river is Ganges,
Yamuna, Cauveri or Godavari.
In the same time all the rivers are polluted with anything and every
thing. In Varanasi the river Ganges is filled with dead bodies,
unburnt corpses and burning funeral pyres. In most of the places
Ganges is filled with raw sewage let out by the towns and Cities
enroute. And on the one side it is worshipped as Goddess and on the
other hand it is the most polluted river in India.
Same is the case with river Cauveri. Many of the dyeing units in Tamil
Nadu discharge their untreated chemicals in this and its tributaries
without any consideration for the villagers who use this water for
agriculture and for drinking. Now Madras High court has come to the
rescue of the river and restrained the owners of these units in
stopping the pollution and instructed them to install cleaning
installations to remove the pollutants before the water is discharged
into the rivers.
In Chennai two good rain fed rivers are polluted once they enter the
city with all industrial discharges, sewage and garbage and are so
polluted no fish thrives there. Also both the rivers stink and one
will have difficulty in crossing the bridges built on these rivers
because of the stink.
Nobody took any interest in cleaning or avoiding the pollution in any
of the rivers. Already warning bells have started ringing about the
dearth of drinking water and imminent potable water shortage in the
world. But as we are lethargic we will take action only when the
situation worsens and not before that.
