Below is Shady Grove's latest newsletter, just out. Here are some quick Prescott Church reminders:

+ We had asked our friends at Shady Grove for a building tour, and on Saturday they responded with gracious hospitalitya good group of about 30 Prescott folks showed up to see all parts of the beautiful Shady Grove facility, including practical instructions on how to make coffee and lock & unlock doors.

+ The Church Council and Education Ministries meetings, originally rescheduled for tomorrow, have been reset and will probably take place next week.

+ This Wednesday, 1/8, we at Prescott resume our Wed night dinners, starting at 6:00, followed this Wednesday by our monthly Adult Hymn Sing (requests taken) in the sanctuary.

+ Be sure to come next Sunday, 1/12, when Shady Grove pastor (soon to be our pastor) Rev. Jarad Bingham will preach for us, then will meet with us in deacon flock groups in the afternoon. This is to help us get to know each other. Here is the schedule for Sunday afternoon:

12:30-1:30  flocks of Annette Bickers, Mary Field, & Ruth Ingram
1:30-2:30  flocks of Jody McClendon & Tawanda Thompson
2:30-3:30  flocks of Joyce Wood & Anne Whirley

You should be hearing from your deacon on this if you haven't already, but if you don't know who your deacon is, there's a list outside the church office or you can call the office at 327-8479.

+ "An Elegant Evening" - Remember that our annual Valentine Dinner, a dress-up occasion for adults (18 & over) only, will be Saturday, 2/15, in Fellowship Hall. You must make paid reservations no later than Sunday, Feb. 2:  $25 individual/$45 couple. Do not make reservations with the church office. Instead, contact one of these: Susan Baldwin, Mickey Eubanks (494-7863), Joyce Wood (682-5670).

+ Our last regular worship service at Prescott will be Jan. 26. On the first Sunday of February we'll process over to Shady Grove.

Stay warm!

One more good cause…
In January we will collect twin sheet sets, nice towels and bath soaps for MidSouth Sober Living! MSL is a non-profit program founded in 2009 for the purpose of creating sober living/transitional housing centers for people who are new in recovery. They currently operate three centers, a congregate living center for women, an 8 unit apartment complex for women and small children, and a large congregate living house for men. Each facility has an on-site manager to provide assistance and guidance. Community support significantly reduces the risk of relapse and enables individuals to once again become contributing members to their family and society. Please bring donations in by January 15th.

Book & Movie Group
On January 23 at 6pm, we will watch Midnight's Children, based on the book by Salman Rushdie. Linda Raiteri will lead the discussion. If you need a copy of The Moor's Last Sigh for February, let Pat know.

WORSHIP Team - As we prepare for the new year, the worship team will be contacting you to help usher, acolyte, bake, serve or chat! Thank you!

In case you didn't receive it, below is a message from Mayor Wharton with info about cold weather measures the City is taking, and also with helpful suggestions for individual citizens -- such as checking on elderly people and others you know who might be vulnerable, and bringing pets indoors.

As you probably know, the high today is in the teens, with single digit temps possible tonight, and tomorrow in the 20s. It won't rise above freezing until Wednesday, they say.

Tom

Dear Friend:

I am writing to make you aware of the various efforts the City of Memphis has ongoing in response to the extreme weather conditions we are now facing.

SHELTERS/WARMING CENTERS

  • The Douglas Community Center at 1616 Ash Street has now been brought online as the second Warming Center opened by the City of Memphis.  The first Warming Center at Orange Mound Community Center (2572 Park Avenue) was opened on Sunday, January 5th. Parks & Neighborhoods Director Janet Hooks and Fire Director Alvin Benson are leading this effort.
  • In an effort to address the overflow crowds at the Union Mission at 383 Poplar Avenue, Memphis Area Transit Authority will be providing transportation from the Union Mission to the two aforementioned Warming Centers.

CHECKING ON CITIZENS

  • I have instructed Fire Director Alvin Benson and Police Director Toney Armstrong to inform employees with their respective divisions to make every reasonable attempt to check the status and well-being of members of our city's vulnerable populations including but not limited to the homeless and the elderly.

OUTREACH

  • The City of Memphis is working in conjunction with the Community Alliance for the Homeless in providing city employees that will join the Outreach Teams that are charged with going out into the community to transport and support members of the homeless community.

STREET CONDITIONS

  • Director Dwan Gilliom and our Public Works divisions continue to closely monitor street conditions.  Salt and sand trucks stand ready to be redeployed whenever conditions warrant.

All city facilities and services remain open and operating with their normal schedules.  This includes our libraries, community centers, and the routes being handled by our sanitation crews.

Lastly, I will underscore our need for every citizen to be involved.  As much as we have city and agency workers out checking on citizens and ensuring their safety, we need everyone playing a part in this effort.  Please take time to knock on a neighbor's door or just call an elderly family member to ensure they have taken proper precautions to protect themselves.

Be Safe,

 A C Wharton

A C Wharton, Jr.

Mayor

P. S.  Don't forget to bring your pets indoors.
