My son is not vocal or concerned about his T1D... it's just a part of him and he's ok with that. So I'm always greatful when I get these rare gems of discussion with him.

The other day, a group of WWII veterans came to speak at his school. My son came home, told me about it and said he wishes he could join the military to "see the world and learn a lot" (he quoted one of the men).  I remained positive and we talked about the other opportunities he has to see the world and learn a lot... and cried later :(

It kills me because we come from a military family and I hate that my son cannot serve.

Now I doubt they will let him in either but this is a story of a solider that was diagnosed after enlistment and got to stay in. It might be a fight to get in but with this soldiers case as an example you might have more if a shot than you think.

Amanda, it's not possible to join when you have T1D: http://www.military.com/join-armed-forces/disqualifiers-medical-conditions.html

They do, however, review your job after you're dx'd in active duty to see if you can stay in :(

Bummer! I think if soldiers are allowed to stay in with it then they should let anyone that can show their sugars are in control should be allowed to join too. Just seems like a double standard for those who really really desire to serve.
