Nowafter upgrading from iOS 16.7. to iOS /iPadOS 17.0.2, the devices doe not show up in iTunes anymore. They are recognized when plugged in, and transfer of pictures using image capture is possible - it just doesn't show up in iTunes. I worked through this (If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone or iPad:) and I tried to reinstall iTunes 11.8.2 while the iPhone was plugged in, but to no effect.

Further to my post, I just finished talking with Apple Tech support regarding the issue. It appears according to the tech that, unfortunatly, it won't be possible any more to get them to work together. It mentioned that my old Mac on El Capitan is consider obsolete and that the new version of ios 17 won't be compatible.

I'm in the same boat. My iMac El Capitan runs fine, so why should I have to pay for a new computer for my phone to be recognize? I can now no longer back up my phone or transfer files, like my music. Big fail.

I read an article mentioning to try another cable, in my case it made a difference. However, after I plug the iphone working on ios 17.0.3 and El Capitan a pop-up said that I needed an update on an Apple add-on software, but the download failed, the software is not available at this time according to Apple server message. So I have to continue searching or finding a new alternative.

Jimmy thanks for this info. I am running on even older OS Sierra 10.12.6 (iTunes 12.8.2.3) so there seems little hope for me. Since updating my iPhone to iOS 17.0 iTunes just doesn't want to know. Seems like I am once again trapped in the Apple spend cycle. It seems to me that if you take care of your Apple products then at some stage your gonna have to ditch them all as slowly but surely updated software becomes incompatible with outdated kit.

Running OS Sierra 10.12.6 with iTunes 12.8.2.3 I have no indication of connectivity with my iPhone 13 Mini. However, running Photos Version 2 (2016) I can import photos from my iPhone. Wonder what Photos has that iTunes doesn't?

I've gone through all of the steps listed in the link provided by sberman and unfortunately they do not resolve the issue. I've spoken to many polite, informed apple technicians, as well as their supervisors and no one can provide a solution. It looks as though there is currently no fix. iOS 13 (up through 13.1.2 as of Oct 1, 2019) simply isn't compatible with High Sierra's most updated version of iTunes (12.8.2.3).

I have a mid 2011 27" iMac that still works perfectly, but is now unable to sync with my iPhone XR. iMac detects iPhone in multiple places, but not iTunes. Newer MacBook and PC's detect it as well without issue. Super bummer. Here's hoping a fix comes, but I doubt old iMacs and OS versions are at the top of anyone's priorities. *sigh*....the sweet agony of being an Apple fan lol.

My scenario was iPhone 6s with iOS 13.1.3 trying to connect to an iMac with macOS 10.13.6 and iTunes 12.8.2.3. My iPhone would not show up in iTunes even though the sys report showed my iPhone connected on the usb port. My iPhone did show up in Photos with no problems importing photos.

As per MercatoWhite, no updates were showing for iTunes in the app store but I downloaded iTunes 12.8 and re-installed. During the reinstall with my iPhone usb connected, I was prompted to make a software update to correct a problem connecting my iPhone. The iTunes installation finished first then it took about 10 min for the software update to complete. Opened up iTunes and my iPhone was showing and working :) Also, the version of iTunes from About continues to show as 12.8.2.3. It looks like the trick may be to have your iPhone connected while updating iTunes so that you're prompted for the software update.

I guess you and Apple forgot about the many (probably hundreds of thousands of ) users like myself who cannot update our iMacs because we have too much very valuable software necessary to our business that doesn't work with later Mac operating systems. It's infuriating that there is no opt-out offered for those of us who don't want to update our phone except for security updates. It's as though we don't really own our own phone. The Mega-Mind decides.

I agree. I have on my iMac running Yosemite, wonderful, productive software necessary to my business, that doesn't work with later operating systems. Hence, I cannot update my OS, which is currently running iTunes 12.8.1.3, without losing older software that I depend on. So my iPhone 10 XR is no good to me if I want to move new music playlists from iTunes on my iMac to my phone. Ugh.

Three are indispensable: Pages '08 (later versions are horrible for our kind of typesetting uses; this much discussed in the typesetting community), Rapid Weaver 3.5 (the user-friendly aspect is the biggest attraction for us); Oxford English Dictionary v. 4.

I have an old iMac which runs fine on Sierra. I just had it repaired because I cannot afford a new iMac. Now I am told by Apple that Sierra is really old (only a few years old I think). So I am forced to buy a new computer because I can't use my iPhone on Itunes? Come on Apple...

I have spent a long time trying to discover the reason why my iPhone 6s, updated to ios 13, wouldn't connect to my iTunes 12.8.2.3. . on ios Sierra. In the end I had a long talk to the Apple helpdesk twice and they told me it wasn't possible. I had to update to Catalina or at least to Mojave. Which I can't.

Sometime ago, when I plugged in my iPhones to backup/sync with the dock cable, an iTunes update was offered and I had it installed (BTW: the update was done but without changing iTunes version number).

I had the same issue with my new Ipad Mini 5. But, curiously, I updated the IOS from 12. to 13. before I tried to do any Itunes syncing. I then managed to sync my Itunes Photos and Music to my Ipad. When I tried to return to Itunes the next day to continue to finish syncing other items, Itunes started its non-recognition. I spent most of the day going thru Discussions until I found this post. Followed your directions, got the same Ipad correction update, and finished installations. Restarted Itunes, and the Ipad was recognized.

Hi, my problem was the same: after updating my iPhone 8 to iOS 13 my mac's (iMac late 2012 10.11.6) iTunes (12.8.2) doesn't recognized my phone. By the first time you connect an iOS 13 device you have to get a message sh like this: "you need to update the computer to use this device with this computer". Maybe this notification was ignored by me, but the message never appeared again while the iTunes doesn't recognized my iPhone again (while the iPhone was visible in the photos app). The support's tips was ineffective, they advise to upgrade to the latest OS on the mac.

As a last option I was downloadad the same iTunes version what installed was currently and reinstalled them and look at the miracle the message appeared again, I accepted the update and the iPhone is visible for the iTunes again, I can sync, backup, etc, everything works fine.

Well, I tried everything without success. I reported it as a bug a week ago. Yesterday, I updated to iOS 16.2 and when I connected the phone, iTunes started up and I got a message that iTunes didn't "recognize the value of the phone." So, I think that's an improvement. Any thoughts about what to do now?

I spent a couple of hours on the phone last week and uploaded logs and other stuff to the engineers. An update to Sierra just appeared in the App Store addressing syncing issues with iPhones and other devices. iTunes 12.8.2.3 is now syncing with my phone and backing it up.

I am having the same issue. I just purchased a new iphone 13 and it said that it would work with el capitan and itunes, and it works with photos and image capture, so the computer can see the phone. It's just not showing in itunes no matter what I do. I've followed all the suggestions in the thread that was posted in the comment above and it did not work.

I am on OS X 10.12.6 (by choice) and my iTunes has been working fine with my iPhone 12 - until this update. I can back up the iPhone, but when iTunes asks me if I would like to install the 14.5 update (and I agree), nothing happens.

Thanks for updating us on your issue. Let's see if we could help you test out this issue a little further. We'd recommend creating a new user next and see if you're still having the issue with iTunes in there. This is a great step to isolate the issue and see if it could be user-specific. You can follow the steps on how to do this in Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.

Thanks for the great troubleshooting and providing us with additional information. We're glad to see that you were able to isolate the issue further on another partition. However, if you're still experiencing issues at this time, we'd recommend getting in touch with an Apple specialist directly by heading over to Contact Apple Support.

I plugged in the phone again, and immediately GraphicConverter recognized it - asking if I would like to browse images on the phone. The System Report > USB does show the device (I redacted the serial number):
