Update: In fact, the program failed to create a basic wand with +1 raise skeleton on it, and pops up similar errors when trying to use the item editor. I've ensured that "item decode" is set to 1.10-1.13, and it was by default. In fact, everything is set how it is apparently supposed to be.
A bit late but I've since found the fix. Seems hero editor is looking for a registry value for "Save Path" but the new blizzard installer doesn't install this value. Fix instructions are:
1. Open Regedit as admin
2. Browse to \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Blizzard Entertainment\Diablo II
3. Add a new value (String Value).
4. Call it "Save Path" and set the value to the location your save files are in eg C:\Users\USERNAME\Saved Games\Diablo II
So I'm not sure what to do. I just downloaded diablo 2 from blizzard, and I have version 1.14. I'm trying to use hero editor for single player mode. Every time I press open on hero editor, it tells me that it cant find my diablo game. From the research that I have done, I think it has to do with the save file? I think before the patch the save file was C:\Program File (x86)\Diablo II\save\ .After the patch it got changed to C:\Users\charles\Saved Games\Diablo II\. Well I have gone into regedit under NewSavePath and I have changed the code to the first one. After I do this, I go back into the game, and I have tried making a new character and saving it. As soon as I do, the code changes right back to C:\Users\charles\Saved Games\Diablo II\. And hero editor cant find my game or my character. What am I doing wrong? Would it be easier to find a older version of diablo and download that one? If I do that, will I have a hard time with it finding my characters if it gets patched to the new version?
Hero editors or trainers are used for single player editing of characters. The one that works across multiple versions of Diablo II, including 1.13, Pluggy and the newest official version - Hero Editor v1.04
PlugY is Diablo II mod that is famous for preserving the game as it is while only extending the Stash of the character to infinite tabs and the stash is sharable across chracters for easy muling. The mod requires 1.13d version of the game so we need to do a little setup before we can play it.
In a move fueled by desperation, I tried opening my pal's save with hero editor. It says "Character file header is not correct. Character file should start with '55AA55AA'. It needs to be corrected before the character is saved''. Afterwards it tells me that the editor supports only D2 version up to 1.13 - I am currently using 1.13d
I am personally using the hero editor to port over my HC characters from BNet to SP when I hit Hell. That way I can start playing with /playersX when I want to and still have my online characters for cross-progression playing and playing with friends occasionally.
This is the best visual character editor for Mount & Blade II Bannerlord at present.

It was popular in London, after the first night (when it was not very warmly received,) and of course is popular hero. The success of a play like this, proves the truth of our view on the state of the stage (BJ, I, 35).
Such characters, if held up in a proper light, may do good after their execution, to others besides the surgeon; but when made the heroes of romance, there is too much danger that their evils will live after them (BJ, I, 78).
