The Maharashtra Commission for Backward Classes will conduct a survey from January 23 to 31 to assess the social, economic and educational backwardness of the Maratha community, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Saturday. Mr. Shinde directed the State administration to carry out this survey, which will cover Maratha and non-Maratha open categories, in three different shifts on a war footing.

Accompanied by thousands of members from the community, Mr. Jarange-Patil is set to reach Azad Maidan, the designated place for protests and rallies in south Mumbai, on January 26 and go on a hunger strike till the government provides reservation to the Marathas. He has demanded issuance of Kunbi OBC certificates to all Marathas.

An estimated 2.50 crore families will be surveyed and renowned institutions like the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) in Pune, and the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, will assist in carrying out this exercise, he said.

Ajit Ranade, Vice-Chancellor of GIPE, said over 1.25 lakh enumerators, including teachers, gram sevaks and anganwadi workers, will be engaged for the survey, which will be completed in about eight days. Mr. Ranade also said training for enumerators started on Saturday in 36 districts, 27 municipalities, and seven cantonment areas.

With the OBCs being a core base of the BJP in Maharashtra for years, Deputy Chief Minister and party leader Devendra Fadnavis had to assure OBC members, who took out protests across the State, that the government would not disturb their quota and no injustice would be meted out to them.

The main reason for the failure of the Marathas was that they went to war without any allies. They could have received support from Rajputs, Jaats and Sikhs, but none of them supported Marathas in the battle. The Marathas had interfered in the internal affairs of the Rajput states (present-day Rajasthan) and levied heavy taxes and huge fines on them. Their raids in the Jat territory had resulted in the loss of trust of Jat chiefs like Suraj Mal. According to an assessment, the Sikhs were ever ready to co-operate with the Marathas, but Marathas had treated Sikhs, who assisted them earlier in their north-west conquest against Afghans as a non-entity in Punjab affairs. This was because of the flawed diplomacy on the part of Marathas in not recognizing the strategic potential of Sikhs.

The Maratha army was also burdened with over 100,000 pilgrims who wished to worship at Hindu places of worship like Mathura, Hardwar, Kashi, etc. Apart from just fighting the battle, the Maratha troops had the responsibility to protect the non-combatants from Afghans. That was the reason why Marathas suffered heavy losses even after the battle. They could not retreat quickly as they were to protect the non-combatants who were accompanying them.

The Afghan cavalry and pikemen ran wild through the streets of Panipat, killing tens of thousands of Maratha soldiers and civilians. The women and children seeking refuge in streets of Panipat were hounded back in Afghan camps as slaves. Children over 14 were beheaded before their own mothers and sisters. Afghan officers who had lost their kin in battle were permitted to carry out massacres of 'infidel' Hindus the next day also, in Panipat and the surrounding area. They arranged victory mounds of severed heads outside their camps. According to the eye-witness chronicles, about 40,000 Maratha prisoners were slaughtered in cold blood the day after the battle.

The unhappy prisoners were paraded in long lines, given a little parched grain and a drink of water, and beheaded... and the women and children who survived were driven off as slaves - twenty-two thousand, many of them of the highest rank in the land.

In April 1761, Abdali was returning triumphant having destroyed Maratha power at the third battle of Panipat. His booty included 22,000 Hindu women being taken to Afghanistan to be sold into slavery. On the way they were to be used by the Afghan soldiers to satisfy their lust.

So far, the Sikhs had watched this theater from a distance by not taking any sides in this battle. The Sikhs were at Sarbat Khalksa, their bi-annual meeting at Amritsar when the relatives of the women pleaded for help. They heard of the slaughter of innocent, rapes of women, and capture of more than twenty thousands Maratha women by the afghans. They heard of the fate of their country's daughters being driven away as Abdali's bounty. Their ire was aroused. All the Khalsa Misls got together and passed a resolution that Abdali is taking Indian women as slaves to his country after plundering the city of Panipat and they will free all the slaves.

Organizing themselves in small bands, the Sikhs decided to attack the rear of Abdali's army carrying the Indian women as captives. Jassa Singh led the a volunteer force and caught up with the Afghans at the River Sutlej at Goindwal. The Afghans were dismayed at the swiftness and ferocity of Sikh attack. Before they could gather themselves to counter the attack, the Sikhs rescued the Maratha women and carried away much of Abdali's booty.

This action of Sikh Misls required great audacity, swift and faultless execution and a complete indifference to danger. Jassa Singh became a household name in north India for his heroics and was appointed as the "Jathedar" of all Misls at the next Sarbat Khalsa.

Abdali reached the safety of Kabul with a bruised ego and a broken nose. He had to wear a silver mask for the rest of his life to cover his severed nose. He came back to Punjab to avenge this humiliation and massacred thousands of Sikhs and destroyed Harmander Sahib, Amritsar. Sikhs rose again and liberated the Harmander Sahib, hounding Abdali back to his rat hole in Afghanistan.

Maharashtra: Maratha community members from Pune district will carry out a candle march today, October 28, from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue located at Shivajinagar to the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Statue at Deccan, according to a report published by Hindustan Times.

Protestors from the Maratha community also blocked the Pune-Nashik highway near Chakan early morning today which also affected the vehicular traffic. However, the road was later cleared by the police officials.

I am aware of their pain and sorrow. The Justice Shinde (retd) committee is working 24 hours and a curative petition has been filed in the Supreme Court (which had struck down the Maratha quota) and it has been admitted. Hence a window has been opened."

The Maratha reservation matter gained prominence in Maharashtra politics when, during his hunger strike protest in September, supporters of Jarange were reportedly subjected to a police baton charge at Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district.

The Shinde government after several rounds of negotiations between Jarange Patil and the government-appointed representatives last week issued a government resolution offering certificates to those Marathas in Marathwada who have records from the Nizam era.

On October 19, the body of Maratha quota activist Sunil Kawale was found hanging from a lamp post along a flyover in Mumbai's Bandra area. He had left behind a suicide note seeking quota for the community.

It's worth noting that the state government has published an advertisement in major newspapers outlining a range of initiatives that are in place for the Maratha community. The advertisement also highlights the advantages provided to the Maratha community concerning employment and educational admissions through the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation.

Maratha Kranti Morcha has called for Maharashtra bandh on August 9, 2018, however, following the Bombay High Court order of avoiding violence and attempting suicides, the Marathi outfit groups will not carry out violent protests in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai but will do thiyya andolan.

Maratha Kranti Morcha protestors informed that they will not call for Mumbai bandh as it affects the common man. They settled on thiyya andolan after setting up a meeting with police officials.

Prior to this, on July 25, 2018, Marathi outfit groups had carried out a protest across Maharashtra along with Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. The protest became violent when one of the protestors committed suicide demanding reservation for the Maratha community in jobs and education. The protestors started pelting stones on police personnel and also torched bus and police vans.

After hurling back the Maratha forces from the walls of Janjira, the Siddy added insult to injury by making an audacious raid after the retreating Marathas deep into the hinterland and capturing and carrying away the wife of Dadoji Raghunath, the commander of the Maratha forces which had attacked Janjira. Another expedition to teach the Siddy a lesson now became imperative. (In the meantime, the Mughal army was left free to rampage freely, gobbling up the Deccan in huge chunks.)

There was a new surge of activity amongst the Mughals, an unaccustomed liveliness brought about by the smell of success. Aurangzeb now directed his full attention upon piece-wise raising the Maratha forts, the numbers of which, according to some estimates run to 365, one for every day of the year. He selected two commanders for the task: Yettikad Khan for the highland region, and the Siddy of Janjira, Kassam Yakoot Khan, for the Konkan. The forts began to fall like mud houses collapsing in a flood, without visible signs of damage. Tattora fell, and the whole chain of supporting forts from Tattora to Panhala. In the Konkan itself, Sagargad, Rajkot and Pali were surrendered to the Siddy by their respective commanders without a fight.
