Your first math placement is very important to your success in college. It should be neither below nor beyond your preparation level, and it should move you toward the completion of your degree program. We want to make sure your math placement fits you and your needs as closely as possible.
Your math course choice will depend on your math background and educational plan. You are strongly encouraged to meet with a mathematics faculty member or a counselor before enrolling. Do not choose your math course based on your score alone.
In order to correctly place students in mathematics courses at Indiana State Universty, students are required to take the Math Placement. All students (incoming and transfer) are required to take the online Math Placement. If you are an incoming ISU student, the test must be completed before attending the State Start-Up orientation. This is a requirement for all students that are new to ISU.
The only exception may be for recent high school graduates who scored a B or better in both semesters of high school Algebra II. Keep in mind that some of the science and major courses also require the score from the math placement. It is best to complete the Math Placement. The Math Placement should be completed in advance to prevent running into any barriers during registration. This will ensure that you are able to register for the best courses for your degree path. If your score is below the prerequisite score for Foundational Studies Quantitave Literacy but you met the prerequisite with your high school math classes, you may still be able to register for the Foundational Studies Quantitative Literacy class. Your advisor will be able to assist you to make this determination at the time of registration.

MAT 119 is finite mathematics and includes linear algebra, linear programming, combinatorics, probability and mathematics of finance. It is used in specific programs as their last math course needed for the program.
ASU encourages each student to spend time in the ALEKS prep and learning module even if the desired score is achieved, because it will lead to better preparation and improved performance in math courses.
The length and the content of the math placement assessment will vary, but can be up to 30 questions. You will see some, but not all, of the math you have learned in high school. It is a placement assessment, not a preview of math courses at ASU. It is designed to identify if you are prepared for a particular course. After you take your first placement assessment, you will have the opportunity to review and master additional topics to reassess and improve your placement.
No. The ALEKS system provides you the tools necessary to complete the assessment. The idea of the assessment is simply to show where you place, and we want to make sure you are placed into the appropriate math course based on your current knowledge. Blank scratch paper and a pencil or pen can be used to work out problems. Please show both sides of the paper to the camera during the environment check.
If you have questions about your placement assessment scores and the courses you should take for your degree program, contact your academic advisor in your major. Their contact information is located in the Academic Support Team box on My ASU.
No. Three attempts are all that is allotted for you during your time as an ASU student. You are advised to begin your math sequence of classes as soon as possible after completing the math placement assessment. Should you change your major, your old score is still valid for one year after completion of the placement assessment. We encourage you to use your three attempts wisely
You will not be able to access your third attempt until you log three or more hours of prep and learning module work between the second and third attempts. Learning modules are designed to help you review material you may have forgotten since your last math course.
It is crucial that the scores be reflective of your current mathematical knowledge. Therefore, the scores are only valid for one year. If your scores have expired, you will need to take the math placement assessment again with your remaining attempts.
You will need to take the assessment using one of these system setups. If you do not have access to one of these systems, check with family, friends or local libraries to see if their computers are equipped with the requirements needed to take the math placement assessment.
If your account is inactive, it means it has expired. Your account is active for one year after creating it; however, it can be extended. Please email
placeme...@asu.edu with your extension request.
Academic advisors use the score you receive on this test to determine the initial mathematics course you take at Ohio State. Students are automatically assigned to take one of two placement tests based on their highest officially reported ACT/SAT score (less than two years old) unless they qualify for an exemption.
Be sure you have requested your official ACT/SAT/AP scores and/or transcripts from other institutions to be sent electronically to Ohio State to ensure proper Placement Testing assignments and avoid taking unnecessary exams.
If you believe you have already submitted an official score/transcript that qualifies you for an exemption and a math test required checklist item remains on your To Do List, contact the Orientation and Placement Testing Office at
740.366.9333 as soon as possible.
Students may use scratch paper, a pencil, and a scientific graphing calculator during the exam. Calculators with computer symbolic algebra or QWERTY keyboards, such as TI-89 or TI-92, are not permitted.
Important Note: If you require disability-based exam accommodations to participate in this math placement exam, you must contact the Disability Services Center to make these arrangements before taking the exam. Please complete the following webform to start the request. If you have questions, please contact the Disability Services Center office at

To support student success, USM uses student scores on the Math Placement Test to determine enrollment in mathematics courses or math-related courses. Many majors at USM have specific math requirements, so completing the Math Placement Test helps place you into the most appropriate course.
All incoming degree students are required to take the Math Placement Test if they have not submitted a SATM or ACT test score. Students who submit a SATM score of 570 or above or ACT Math score of 22 or above are required to take the Math Placement Test if they are interested in enrolling in a Pre-Calculus (MAT 140) or Calculus (MAT 152) course as their first math course at USM.
USM is using the ALEKS PPL, a web-based test designed to identify your strengths and weakness in mathematics. The Placement Assessment has up to 30 questions and generally takes 60-90 minutes to complete (the maximum time allowed is 3 hours). The expectation is that you start and finish the test in one sitting.
If you are taking the test for the first time: Be sure your USM email account is activated, and then review the log-in procedures below, before clicking on the ALEKS Math Placement Test link.
Your overall test score is a number between 0 and 100. This score represents the percentage of topics ALEKS has identified that you have mastered. Please see the following test score rubric to interpret the math test score.
Other Course Placement Options: Depending upon your major, the following math-related courses could be an option for those with an adequate math test score. Please discuss with your academic advisor.
SAT or ACT scores: If you are being prompted to take this test on your Enrollment Checklist (or if you need to meet a math prerequisite for a class like Chemistry), we may not have verified test scores for you. Students have the option to download their official score report for ACT and/or SAT. These downloadable score reports may be emailed to
proce...@appstate.edu to be added to your application.
