I remember back in the 80s when I had a 20-band equalizer in my crusty old Audi Fox that allowed me to hear Rush and Van Halen to my precise specifications. I was and am an audio nerd. These days, I much prefer listening to vinyl, but I do opt for Spotify on certain occasions: This includes when I'm running, when I'm searching for new music, or when I want to hear something that was either never pressed on vinyl or is out of print.
Fortunately, Spotify has a built-in equalizer that allows you to select from a number of presets and even adjust it manually. Now, the manual adjustment only allows for six bands (60Hz, 150Hz, 400Hz, 1Khz, 2.4KHz, and 15KHz) but that should be enough for most.
The background: I'm using a set of wireless Astro A50 headphones (designed for the PS4) and Windows 10 with the latest updates. I have the wireless transmitter connected to my machine via USB which then transmits to the headphones. Ideally I would be using optical, but I recently built this machine and in order to get a nice GPU, CPU, and SSD I had to skip on the soundcard so I'm using the motherboard audio. I'm pretty disappointed with the sound quality of these headphones through USB. I'm getting a really boxy, bass heavy sound and dark highs with very little sibilance which sucks because I know these cans are very capable. That's where Equalizer APO comes in ;)

With an equalizer you are able to adjust the volume levels of various ranges in the audio spectrum. This means that you are able to, for example, increase the lower frequencies. This will increase the amount of bass you hear. The same goes for other frequencies along the spectrum, from low to high. It's recommended to use built-in equalizer presets.
