Spotlight cpu usage?

I'm trying to track down what made my computer suddenly start running
hot, with high CPU usage by Spotlight's mds process.
Has anyone seen any problems of this type? I don't really suspect
precipitate because I've had it installed longer than this problem has
been happening, and I have very few Google docs and they seldom
change. Just grasping at straws.
