I know this is an Illustrator forum, but in the past I've seen and responded to questions about Silhouette Studio, the software that drives the Cameo cutters from Silhouette America so I thought I'd throw this out here.

I use Illustrator to create SVG and DXF files that I import into Silhouette Studio on a 2017 iMac that is realllllllly showing it's age. I'd like to buy a new computer, but I'm unsure of what the world of M1 brings me in terms of stability in software.

I know Rosetta exists to help with programs not designed for the M1 chips, but I'm looking for real world experience of anyone actually running Silhouette Studio on a new Mac to help me decide if I'm just trading one slow and aggravating experience (the outdated computer) for another (new computer, incompatabile software).

I am running Silhoutte Studio on a new base model 2021 Macbook Pro 14" with the M1 Pro chip and Monterey OS. Sadly, it is not a great experience. The software runs quite slow and laggy for me. I have been running SS 4.4.895.001 version mostly (Business Edition) and do some SVG designing with it. I can only assume it's partly due to the translation that has to happen through Rosetta 2 but I can't say that for certain. (At present, I can't get my laptop to talk to my Cameo 3 either but I'm still working that out).

Side Note: ALSO... seems a LOT of us are having trackpad issues when it comes to using the Tap-to-click feature. I actually ended up at the store recently trying to diagnose the issue. Best info as of now is that it's a problem with Monterey and not the hardware but a LOT of us are hoping that gets resolved soon. I know that may be off topic but just to mention in case you plan on using the build-in trackpad with the tap-to-click turned on

I have Adobe Illustrator but (sadly) I only use it very lightly for a few tasks... on my bucket list to learn more and possibly transition my designing over there! With what little I do, it seems to run nicely.

I do 99% of my designing in Illustrator and then export to SS just to do the cutting portion. I'm an old-school Illustrator user (way back to the time when it came on a floppy disk) so I'm just hard wired to working that way.

With the small amount of work I have done in Studio, I'm betting you actually have more Illustrator skills than you think - they are very similar, just Illustrator has a ton more features so it appears to have a longer learning curve but if you stay on specific task (just designing for cut files - not 3D illustrations, etc.) you. might might be surprised how easy it is.

It's called Silhouette Connect and it allows you to take your created items in Illustrator and oepn them directly to the app called Silhoeutte Connect which is just like having a SEND page from the silhouette software but for the content in Illustrator.

BE CAREFUL THOUGH, From what I have used, if you have content that is in Silhouette Studio from the Silhouette Design Store, you can NOT bring it over to Illustrator to work wtih it. It turns the designs to dotted lines even when you export as an SVG (which btw you have to do to get the items you want into Illustrator anyway. There is no way to just open or import the .silhoeuttestudiofiles into Illustrator. You have to export them as SVGs (Which required the business update of Silhouette Studio) and then place that item in through the Place option. Also, it's like 30 dollars for that plugin.

It is not ideal and the fact that silhouette hasn't said anything about optomizing for M1 is making it hard for alot of people since it makes the abilities and work much slower than it should or is anywhere else.

Hi! I know the thread is quite old, but does Silhouette now function as expected? I'm thinking about replacing an older Mac with a Macbook Air M1. But if it's still not working I guess we need to switch to PC.

I've had my little sticker-business for 2 years now, while studying at the same time. I've been using the Silhouette Cameo with Silhouette Studio. It treated me very good, but while my business grew, the cutter became too small.

You are welcome, and i did post the wrong link and have corrected it. Looks like your other post follows a similar path. can you try "printing" it as a pdf without saving it as a jpeg. Then hopefully it might embed the vectors in a file. I have never used Silhouette studio so i won't be of much help.

Looks like you need to find Silhouette Studio 1.9.0d and purchase a "Designer Edition" upgrade card as this is the only version that allows the .studio file to be exported to an .svg files. They deleted this feature in updates of the program.

I am going through this right now also. Are you using a mac or a PC? Like what Jarrotto said, it is my understanding that if you have the most current upgrade and the "Designer Editions" you can save your files as a .svg file, however this seems to only work on PC's. I use a Mac and do not have this option.

I have looked for a lot of ways around this on the internet, and the only way I have figured out is is to take my file in silhouette and fill it in with a color and print it, then (on a mac) you have an option to select .pdf in the print box and save as .pdf it is a lot of steps. I think these are similar to the steps in the link you posted earlier from the catscrapfever blog.

Thank you for your inquiry. The Silhouette Studio is only currently capable of exporting (or saving) into a STUDIO file format, which is the native proprietary file type for the software. There are currently no other file types that the software can export or save.

If you may wish to provide an image to a non-user of the Silhouette system to view how the program you are working on appears, you may opt to take a screen clipping (as directed at -a-screenshot.org). This will allow you to create a PNG or JPG file, as may be desired. There is not a method of exporting a vector file for other software programs. We are sorry for any frustration this may cause. We will relay the desire to see such considered for potential future updated versions.

Does anyone know if the above posted info is still accurate? I need to get several hundred traced files from Silhouette Studio into Graphtec Studio. Both are products of Graphtec Corporation and it really makes no sense to have virtually identical software programs that are not able to open each others' files. Ideally, I'd like to be able to use the CE6000 with Silhouette Studio. Anyone know if this is possible?

I just tried something that you may be able to do, I have Flexidesigner which is also it's own format. FS.. I opened Flexidesigner imported a Flexi file, Highlighted the file and copied it. I also had Graphtec Studio open and out of the way a little, I was able to paste that Flexi file into Graphtec Studio.

You could try this also, Although I don't know anything about Silhouette.. You can download Graphtec Studio now from the Graphtec website,,,, Have both programs open .minimize them,.. Copy from Silhouette and see if you can paste into Graphtec Studio. If it works for you, you would not have to change every file at one time, but maybe as you use them..

I noticed that Silhouette also saved as a GSP *gsp.. file, in drop down box. And I tried that also. Because Graphtec Studio shows it imports *gsp files. ...It didn't work for me... I tried changing the file to GST, That didn't work..

I wish we could get this figured out or be able to cut straight from Silhouette Studio. I am having problems with the graph tech studio changing the size of my images before it cuts! EER I have 50 shirts that need to be done by this weekend and i work a full time job and can only work on them at night. I have wasted 3 yards of htv and want to throw my machine out the window, though it's a little too large to fit!!!

MK Creations called Graphtec and asked about the Graphtec Studio Pro. They told her that version isn't out yet. I have an older Adobe CS2 and was trying to learn that with Inkscape also. Also, all the vector files that are posted here eps, svg, etc don't open in Graphtec Studio (at least for me). The Adobe CS2 opens them fine though. When I make a simple word or phrase in GS and cut them out, and then try to save them, the ONLY option for me is Graphtec Studio. Seems like they are a little proprietary

HELP... I am sick of dealing with this huge obstacle to my productivity and I finally have hit a wall. I have a pixma G7020... and I love everything about it except for a HUGE thing... the inability to automatically set the MAIN TRAY as the default tray to pull paper from NO MATTER WHAT. If something is printing, it should automatically pull from the main paper tray. But it won't. It defaults to REAR. EVERY TIME. I've altered tons of settings on and off...and it doesn't matter. EXAMPLES: I can't print from my phone because it wants to print from the rear tray EVERY SINGLE TIME and I have to manually overide it BY HAND on the actual printer (not a setting on the phone printer options) by touching OK on the actual printer control panel. So if I'm upstairs... I have to go downstairs, and then by that point, I may as well pull up the item on my computer, not the phone. But where it matters even more....This is a huge problem day to day with my business. If I print from ANY program (right now trying to print order invoices from Etsy).... the options panel that comes up from the print options in etsy... I set all the settings up...if I print to my $100 printer by Canon (the Ts6320)...it will print as it should. But if I change to my expensive workhorse...the 67020.... it doesn't matter. It defaults to the rear tray. There is NO option on the screen from within the print module in Chrome/Etsy that allows us to select which tray to pull from. And if I open up the printer options to override the program/browser printer options menu....then I lose all the other features like printing 4 orders per page, color vs b&W, certain page selection, etc. But every single printer I've owned (and it's been at least 10 in the course of my life...) the default tray would be the main paper tray. When something is 8.5x11 in size, then it should default to the MAIN tray. But nope. It defaults to REAR every single darn time. I can get it to stay to last printer settings when I'm printing from photoshop or silhouette studio ... indesign, etc... but if I print from the internet, like Etsy, or google, or google docs, concert tickets, a recipe....whatever... it sends to the REAR and then it beeps and says "no paper in rear tray." I tap OK... hoping that will mean "then use the main tray, dummy!!!" but no can do... it just beeps again. Rinse and repeat.
