Can anyone give me a very, very basic hint as to how to get midi into PL on the mac, and control something?

Right now I have a simple movie player, and have created a button in a gui that jumps to a random point in the movie while it is playing. How could I trigger that button, or that same random jump, using, say, a noteon message?

I'm looking at this page:

But… where do I find this midi .pxr thing?

Thanks!

Hi, and welcome! You create a midi bindings file the same way you create a video or gui file - right-click / new on the root node of the project in the Projects tab.

At the moment only MIDI controllers are supported. Note on/off on my list to do. It's possible to write a component that does this but not so easy.

Hopefully MIDI in is working on mac on the JDK by default these days.

Best wishes,

Neil

Ah, see it now, thanks Neil. Controller should be ok, doesn't need to be a note message… will have another play with it tomorrow.

Hi Neil
I'm pretty new to Praxis but i'm blown away by the possibilities !  Love it !
I'm currently working on a setup where i use a BCF2000 midi controller for fades and video start/stop (pretty basic stuff) and this works just fine - correction : it works great
Now i want to link this video server to my audio sequencer to be able to trigger changes in the video using the midi out of my sequencer
however, these messages are note on/off, not CC, so praxis currently ignores these messages
i can do some midi magic on my audio sequencer and translate notes > CC, but that would complicate my audio setup even more, so i was wondering if you had made any progress on this lately ?

Unfortunately not yet - been tied up with a few other things. I'll
take another look soon to see if there's a quick solution. I really
want to rethink MIDI / OSC support.

Are you using a system with JACK on it by the way? Back from a chat
last August in the Lobby of the Gitter chat is
https://files.gitter.im/praxis-live/Lobby/zWh4/JACK-MIDI-Test-take2.zip
That creates a JACK MIDI client in code and sends notes to a synth.
Might be a starting point if you want to code your own node for this.
Similarly, it's feasible to do similar with JavaSound MIDI.

Best wishes,

Neil

Thanks for the fast reply Neil, and no worries, i know how time flies !!  :-)

Concerning the jack midi client : my audio machine is a linux box (running Hydrogen as sequencer), but Praxis will be running on a MAC without jack support.  This is MAC is not mine so i dont want to mess with it to much.
For now i think i'll probably be able to use mididings or some other midi tool to convert the note messages coming from my sequencer to CC messages.  These CC messages i can then send to the MAC running Praxis

If all goes well, I'll be sequencing music (external analogue synths), video (Praxis) and light (DMX) from my pc !
fingers crossed ;-)

grtz
