Any one in orders found with his wifewas to be excommunicated for a year, deposed, and relegated amongthe laity; while the arch-priest who neglected the enforcement ofthese rules was to be imprisoned on bread and water for a month.An equally suggestive illustration of the condition of society isafforded by another canon, directed against the frequent marriages ofnuns, who excused themselves on the ground that they had taken theveil to avoid the risk of forcible abduction. Allusion is made to thelaws of Childebert and Clotair, maintained in vigor by Charibert,punishing such attempts severely, and girls who anticipate them aredirected to seek temporary asylum in the church until their kindredcan protect them under the royal authority, or find husbands for them.253

It was evident that the age was rapidly outstripping the church,and that the latter, to maintain its influence and position, must conformto the necessities of progress and enlightenment. On previousoccasions it had done so, and had, with marvellous tact and readiness,adapted itself to the exigencies of the situation in the longseries of vicissitudes which had ended by placing it supreme overEurope. A reform such as was demanded,while increasing its influence over the souls of men, would havedeprived it of control over their purses; reform meant poverty.The sumpter-mule loaded with gold, wrung from the humble pittanceof the Westphalian peasant, under pretext of prosecuting the waragainst the infidel, would no longer cross the Alps to stimulate withits treasure the mighty genius of Michael Angelo, or the fascinatingtenderness of Raphael; to provide princely revenues for the bastardsof a pope, or to pay mercenaries who were to win them cities andlordships; to fill the antechamber of a cardinal with parasites, andto deck his mistresses with the silks and jewels of Ind; to feed needymen of letters and scurrilous poets; to soothe the itching palms ofthe Rota, and to enable all Rome to live on the tribute so cunninglyexacted of the barbarian.1033 The wretched ending of the council of413Bâle rendered any internal reformation impossible which did notderive its initiative and inspiration from Rome, as was shown by thefailure of the council of Pisa. In Rome, it would have requiredthe energy of Hildebrand, the stern self-reliance of Innocent, theunworldly asceticism of Celestin combined, to even essay a reformwhich threatened destruction so complete to all the interests accumulatedby sacerdotalism around the Eternal City. Leo X. was neitherHildebrand, nor Innocent, nor Celestin. With his voluptuous nature,elegant culture, and easy temper, it is no wonder that he failed toread aright the signs of the times, and that he did not even recognizethe necessity which should impose upon him a task so utterlybeyond his powers. The fifth council of Lateran had no practicalresult. Blindly he plunged on; money must be had at any cost,until the salvation mongering of Tetzel, little if any worse than thatof his predecessors, could no longer bear the critical spirit of theage, and Teutonic insubordination at length found a mouth-piece inthe Monk of Wittenberg.
