Healthcare touches us all, so we started out speaking to nurses and nursing assistants, one of the largest professional groups in the United States, to learn about the problems they faced. Why does the stereotype of the \u201Cstruggling nurse\u201D exist in a country that relies so deeply on caregivers? In one conversation after another, we were told that the market for healthcare talent was broken.

That\u2019s why we built a marketplace for healthcare talent. We wanted to create a way to match healthcare professionals \u2014 nurses, nursing assistants, medical assistants and others \u2014 with the facilities that needed them. We wanted them to be able to choose when they worked, and where, and how often.

Clipboard isn't alone in the tech-enabled healthcare staffing space. Earlier this month, nurse-focused platform IntelyCare announced it had raised $115 million in Series C funding. Late last year, connectRN scooped up $76 million. Prolucent Health raised $11.5 million in a Series A round in December.

The round was led by W Health Ventures, with participation from LifeBridge Health, Healthworx and individual investors. Ryse includes in-person care at offices in Arlington, Va., and Baltimore. Patients are provided with a continuous glucose monitor and a custom health-tracking app. They can also stay in touch with their care team through video calls, email and messages.

"Traditionally, patients get healthcare once a year or a few times a year, while they are making decisions about and struggling with chronic conditions every single day," cofounder and chief medical officer Dr. Erin Kane said in a statement.

In the age of the gig economy, healthcare workers use many different mobile-phone apps to find work and get paid. Paulette Hewitt, a nursing assistant, booked shifts at different healthcare facilities in Los Angeles through an app called Clipboard Health.

MarketWatch also obtained records for nearly 20 wage claims filed by Clipboard Health app users with the California Labor Commissioner since 2020. They show that other healthcare workers from around the state complained of experiences similar to those of Hewitt. The workers alleged unpaid or delayed wages and overtime pay, and complained about a lack of adequate support staff to whom they could talk about their issues. In some cases, the nursing assistants and licensed vocational nurses said they were not given extra pay that had been promised to them when they took care of COVID-19 patients.

From nurses to lab assistants, healthcare professionals in the United States are overworked and underpaid. Many hospitals and healthcare facilities face a critical shortage in trained personnel, leaving them grappling with ways to adequately care for their patients. Over the past two years, the pandemic has only aggravated the strain on our increasingly fragile system.

Our healthcare system fails to meet the needs of the very people who work within it. For instance, many nurses want to have flexibility and control over their schedules but struggle to find additional units of work within the opaque healthcare system. Similarly, healthcare facilities face unpredictable needs and often experience shortages of trained personnel.

Clipboard presents a solution to this problem: its marketplace matches healthcare professionals at scale to healthcare facilities that want to hire a large number of part-time staff. By creating a mutually beneficial system that fits the needs of both healthcare professionals and facilities, Clipboard resolves many of the frustrations and talent shortages in the modern healthcare system.

Short-staffed health facilities represent a long-term problem that the pandemic has made more acute. Since March 2020, the number of people working at U.S. hospitals declined by more than 2%, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, while emergency department wait times increased. A recent analysis of workforce data by Premier found that staffing shortages cost hospitals $24 billion during the pandemic.

In addition to worse care for patients and spiraling costs for administrators, short-staffed facilities lead to burnout among healthcare professionals. A 2021 Kaiser Family Foundation/Washington Post poll found that about three in 10 healthcare workers considered leaving the profession while about six in 10 said pandemic-related stress had harmed their mental health.

Underlining the appetite for startups like Clipboard, venture capitalists in the U.S. invested $37.9 billion into digital health startups in 2021, up 75% from $21.7 billion in 2020, according to CB Insights.
