The Local School Wellness Policy requirement was established by the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, and further strengthened by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. It requires each local LEA participating in the National School Lunch Program and/or School Breakfast Program to develop a local school wellness policy that promotes the health of students and addresses the growing problem of childhood obesity. The responsibility for developing a local school wellness policy is placed at the local level so the unique needs of each school under the jurisdiction of the LEA can be addressed.

The Wellness Policy in Action Tool (WPAT), developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the UCONN Rudd Center for Food Policy and Health, is an online tool to help districts and schools examine the alignment of district wellness policies and school-level practices for nutrition and physical activity. The WPAT, designed to help schools meet triennial assessment requirements, addresses 31 key topics using questions from the WellSAT 3.0 and the School Health Index. The WPAT provides scores and actionable recommendations to help users continually improve school wellness policies and practices.

The final rule requires state agencies to assess compliance with the wellness policy requirements as a part of the general areas of the administrative review every three years. LEAs must conduct an assessment of the wellness policy every three years, at a minimum. This assessment determines:

Wellness at Penn is dedicated to caring for students during their academic journey while creating a campus-wide community of care. Our team is committed to offering a wide range of opportunities to access support, clinical resources, education, and practical tools to meaningfully engage with one's health and wellbeing.

Our vision is simple: we want to create a campus experience that integrates the science, theory, and practice of wellness. We will accomplish this by infusing wellness across its eight domains throughout the Penn experience through inclusive, innovative, and impactful initiatives. The eight domains of Wellness include: physical, emotional, social, intellectual, environmental, financial, occupational, and spiritual wellness. All of our initiatives are grounded in collaboration and fueled by CARE: compassion, accessibility, respect, and empowerment.

Over the past 2 1/2 decades, a variety of models of wellness have been proposed, the earliest ones being based in the physical health professions (e.g., Hettler, 1984; Ardell, 1977), and the most recent reflecting correlates of psychological well-being identified through the positive psychology movement (Seligman, 2002; Snyder & Lopez, 2001).

Two current models are based in counseling theory, specifically Adlerian Individual Psychology. The first, the Wheel of Wellness, is a theoretical model introduced in the early 1990s (Sweeney & Witmer, 1991; Witmer & Sweeney, 1992) and later modified to incorporate new findings relative to issues of diversity and self direction (Myers, Sweeney, & Witmer, 2000). As was true of earlier models, the Wheel model evolved from an examination of the existing knowledge base relative to components of wellness and was measured using the Wellness Evaluation of Lifestyle (WEL).

Research using the Wheel model and an assessment instrument based on that model led to the development of a new model, The Indivisible Self, based on structural equation modeling with a large data base (Hattie, Myers, & Sweeney, 2004). This evidence-based model includes a three-level factor structure, with one higher order wellness factor, five second order factors of the self, and 17 third order factors. The components of this model are assessed with the Five Factor Wellness Inventory (5F-Wel).

Wellness is primarily being in good physical and mental health. Because mental health and physical health are so closely linked, problems in one area can impact the other. Self-Care for Physical Wellness: Consider new types of physical activities that you have never tried before, or maybe something that you have always wanted to try but just have not had the time. If you are a runner, maybe consider interspersing it with walking. If you are a walker, maybe consider listening to a meditation as you walk. If you do neither, consider incorporating gentle stretches while studying. Having positive and curious conversations with family and friends about their physical wellness may prompt new ways to consider strategies for ourselves.

Physical wellness promotes proper care of our bodies for optimal health and functioning. There are many elements of physical wellness that all must be cared for together. Overall physical wellness encourages the balance of physical activity, nutrition and mental well-being to keep your body in top condition. Spiritual wellness is more than being of a certain religion. It is a personal involvement with values and beliefs that provide a purpose and meaning to our lives. It may involve prayer, meditation, yoga, living by certain principles, morals and faith.

Spiritual wellness not only allows you to seek meaning and purpose in human existence, but it also allows you to appreciate your life experiences for what they are. When you find meaning in your life experiences, you will be able to develop a harmony with your inner self and the outside world. In simpler terms, spiritual wellness grants you balance.

The route to spiritual wellness is something you must learn to master on your own. Spiritual wellness strongly emphasizes the importance of building inner resources and inner thoughts in order to give meaning to experience. It is also important to know that spiritual wellness does not mandate you to pick up a religious practice. However, religion may be one route you may take to boost your spiritual wellness. Below are some recommendations for you to practice in order to maintain an optimal level of spiritual wellness.

Social wellness refers to the relationships we have and how we interact with others. Our relationships can offer support during difficult times. Social wellness involves building healthy, nurturing and supportive relationships as well as fostering a genuine connection with those around you. Conscious actions are important in learning how to balance your social life with your academic and professional lives. Social wellness also includes balancing the unique needs of romantic relationships with other parts of your life.

Maintaining an optimal level of social wellness allows you to build healthy relationships with others.
