Important note: Although the OverDrive app has been discontinued, Kobo devices with built-in OverDrive functionality will still work. You can continue borrowing and reading OverDrive ebooks on these devices as usual.
Many newer Kobo models include built-in OverDrive support, which lets you add your library card and read ebooks directly on your Kobo ereader. Learn more and see which devices are supported on Kobo's "OverDrive: Common questions" page.
For older Kobo devices, you can add books you've borrowed with Libby to your Kobo using Adobe Digital Editions. Learn more about transferring books to an ereader from Libby or visit Kobo's "Add eBooks with Adobe Digital Editions" page for additional information and device-related troubleshooting.
To see the books you added, go to the 'My Books' menu on your eReader. Tap Filter at the top of the screen, then select Imported. You'll see all the items you've added with Adobe Digital Editions.
The cheapest Amazon Kindle is also the best e-reader for most people. Its affordable price, portability, upgraded display, 16 GB of base storage, and USB-C charging compatibility check the most-important boxes, plus Amazon offers a massive ebook catalog that frequently offers better prices than the competition. Checking out ebooks from the library via the Libby app on a phone or tablet and then having them delivered to your Kindle is also fairly intuitive.
The base Kindle comes with double the base storage of the Kindle Paperwhite. If you have a huge ebook collection or like to listen to audiobooks on your Kindle, the 16 GB of storage in this model is a blessing. The Kindle Paperwhite comes with 8 GB; you have to pay more for 16 GB.
The Kindle ecosystem is huge. The collection of services that Amazon and its partners offer is a major reason we love Kindles in general. You can share purchased books with people on your Amazon Prime account; use X-Ray, which helps identify notable people and terms in your books; subscribe to the optional Kindle Unlimited service, which gives you on-demand access to a huge catalog of books for a flat rate every month; and opt for Amazon Kids+, which provides access to kids books, movies, TV shows, and more (a free, one-year subscription is included with the Kindle Kids model, which costs an extra $20 but also comes with a cover, a longer warranty, and no ads).
Kobo is like Amazon in that if you want to buy Japanese books, you need to create a login for the Japanese site (which for Kobo includes putting in a Japanese-looking address[1]). And you can only use one login on a device at a time. Also, your debit or credit card needs to allow foreign transactions.
1. Connect your eReader to your computer using the USB cable. Your eReader will prompt you to either keep reading or manage your library. You can use your computer or the Desktop Application to add books and manage your eReader.
5. Drag and drop your eBooks into the eReader window. You can now disconnect your eReader and read your new books.

All Kobo e-readers share a unique pagination system giving users the option to either count and reference pages separately within each chapter or in the book as a whole. Up until an update in January 2022 Kobo readers required connection to the Internet during the initial setup phase and did not work until they were connected to Kobo's servers; however, they now support "sideload mode," which allows the reader to be used without registering it to a Kobo account,[27] Kobo e-readers support viewing KEPUB (Kobo's proprietary ebook format based on the EPUB format), EPUB, Adobe PDF, plain text, HTML, and unprotected Mobipocket (MOBI, PRC) e-books. Some also support other formats, such as ZIM, unofficially.
The Kobo Sage and Kobo Libra 2 are the first Kobo ereaders to come with Bluetooth support; thus, audiobooks can be played from the e-reader with the use of an external Bluetooth speaker. The Kobo Libra 2 is upgraded with USB-C over the previous standard, Micro-USB. The Libra 2 features a 7-inch E-ink Carta 1200 display with 1680 x 1264 resolution and 300 PPI. It has 32 GB of storage.[28][29]
Kobo Inc. announced its first e-reader on 24 March 2010, at the CTIA show.[32] The device was officially released on 1 May 2010.[33] It had expandable memory, holding an additional 4 GB via an SD slot and limited wireless connectivity via Bluetooth to select Blackberry wireless devices. It was available in black or white and came preloaded with 100 public domain books.[1] It was manufactured by Netronix Inc.,[34] a Taiwan based company with factories in Taiwan and China.[35]
A new model with Wi-Fi capability was released on 15 October 2010. It included an improved processor, screen, and new colour choices (porcelain/metallic silver, porcelain/pearlized lilac, and onyx). The SD expansion had been improved to claim a capacity for up to 10,000 books with a 32 GB SD card.[39] Other improvements included a longer battery life and a built-in dictionary.[40]
I figured out that my iPad had one email address for a kobo account and the e-reader had a different one. Changed the email address on the e-reader and now the books are the same on both devices. (you will lose the books on the signed out email account but can re-access by signing in with the old account)
In the Netherlands (and probably other parts in Europe), Kobo is one of the leading ereader manufacturers instead of Kindle. I enjoy reading books and using the highlight function on my Kobo, but there is no frictionless way of importing them into Obsidian. Q: Does Kobo allow sharing of books between Kobo devices, like Kindle and Nook do?
A: It is not possible for a Kobo customer to lend or share eBooks from their library with another person. The eBooks in your Kobo library are tied directly to your account and password.
Libby is a third-party app by OverDrive, a global distributor of content for libraries and schools. You can borrow and download NLB's eBooks / Audiobooks, so that you can enjoy them even when you are offline. Watch a short introduction video on how to set up Libby.
NLB Mobile is designed for access and transactions. It lets you borrow and read or listen to eBooks / Audiobooks online, but does not have a built-in reader for downloaded eBooks / Audiobooks. Installing Libby will let you read downloaded eBooks in a user-friendly interface.
To find books that are available right now, you can browse "Available" categories in Libby, such as this list of popular but available books for adults. In any category in Libby, you can also filter out unavailable books by tapping on Refine > Available Now. Log in with your myLibrary ID via the OverDrive integration under Settings > OverDrive* on these Kobo devices to read NLB's eBooks. Titles do not need to be available in Kobo format to be downloaded on a Kobo device. However, only NLB eBooks which are found in the Kobo store can be borrowed directly from these Kobo devices. Step 3: Tap on the underlined 20 megabytes to change the maximum file size for automatic downloads. If you wish, you can also switch off "Download only on WiFi" if you want the app to download books automatically over cellular data. Do note that if you do this, you may incur charges from your telco for exceeding your data quota.
3. When you install the software, you will be asked if you want to Authorize Computer. Select this option. If you already have an Adobe ID, enter it here (you may have one if you have read ebooks or ARCs on another computer or mobile device before). Otherwise, click the link in this box to get an Adobe ID online and enter your Adobe ID here to authorize your computer.
Connect the supported eReader device to your computer and launch Digital Editions. Digital Editions automatically detects the presence of your device and offers to authorize it with your Adobe ID. If you have not authorized Digital Editions with your computer, you will need to complete that first (Digital Editions guides you through that process). Both Digital Editions and the device must be authorized to be able to transfer protected content to and from the device. Unprotected content can be transferred to and from the device without authorizing either the device or Digital Editions, but Adobe strongly advises authorizing Digital Editions as it gives you content portability for your protected books, whether on Digital Editions or the supported device.
