"Vimalakirti Sutra"
The Vimalakirti Sutra has been a popular Buddhist text throughout Asia for over two thousand years. It is noted for it's qualities of being concise, having vivid dramatic and humorous episodes, and having an eloquent exposition of emptiness. It is different from most other sutras in that the main character is not Buddha or a monk, but the layman Vimalakirti, who is shown to be a Bodhisattva and to have spiritual attainment equal to or better than many of Buddha's ordained disciples. This Sutra serves as an encouragement to laypeople that the highest levels of spiritual attainment are not reserved for monks and nuns, but are open to laypersons equally.
