Hello there,
I wanted to update the group that the Spring Hike at Turkey Run and Shades State Park is gaining momentum. This will be a two day event Saturday May 2nd and Sunday May 3rd.
Day 1- Saturday May 2nd
I am planning on hitting the trails at Turkey Run on Saturday (hyperlink). Let's plan on meeting at the Turkey Run Lodge Lobby at 10AM EST. The trails are short but vary in difficulty. I would say this is one of my favorite places to hike. I think we will likely start with the shortest loops so that we can have regular check points at the lodge to get people as they are trickling in to join the crew. I highly encourage staying overnight if you are able to. The view at Sunset Point is amazing. I just called the Turkey Run lodge and they are still at 50% capacity. There is a pool and a decent buffet that I personally vouch for. Price is $200-250 for a night. I have received feedback that there are AirBNBs in the area around ~$100 and here is a site on area camping. I know there is already a group that plans on camping!
Carpooling Day 1- Meet at Walmart Supercenter NW parking lot by trailhead on South High Cross Road at 7:30AM CST.
Day 2- Sunday May 3rd
I will need some trail guiding assistance with Shades State Park (hyperlink) as I have never been there. I have heard that it is much nicer and less crowded than Turkey Run. I am excited to explore. I'd like to get an early start (assuming we don't get too rowdy the night before!) so I invite any campers and overnighters to meet at 9AM EST at the Hickory Lot. We can then reconnect with the carpoolers around 10AM CST in Hickory Lot after a little exploring.
Carpooling Day 2 - Meet at Walmart Supercenter NW parking lot by trailhead on South High Cross Road at 7:30AM CST.
Bring comfortable shoes! The trails are well maintained but there are a lot of ups and downs, twists and turns. Hiking sticks might also be a good idea for the more rugged paths. The Turkey Run site says dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet and attended at all times. I encourage you to use your own judgement.
I already have a running list of folks who will join but if you have not already email me your name/mobile number. It is going to be a fun group.
