Hey everyone!

Here is a list of events that i could think of for next year. Feel free to reply with any ideas or if i missed anything.

  • Open house for old members
  • Open house for new members
  • Subo club fair
  • Game night/ WEPA nights- we should probably do this the last thursday of every month or something...if not, we could have it multiple times throughout the year. We could have Dominos, card games, board games, video games, music and fun :)
  • Club Jeopardy (Roots: back to basics)
  • Cultural food workshop
  • Hispanic Heritage month: This is a big one! We could a week full of events targeting the latino community. That week we can have BC's very own "Nuestra Belleza Latina" lol and maybe a guy pageant too. Who doesn't want to see beautiful latina women doing their thang?! The other days we shall brain storm! Maybe a party? Idk, Up to you guys! It could be a collabe with the latino orgs on campus (that are willing to put in work of course)
  • Thanksgiving dinner
  • El dia de los muertos workshop (halloween obviously)
  • Halloween party
  • Angelitos
  • Relationship workshop
  • Vday ceremony ? idk, this might not work but i was thinking of having a little cute ceremony where people bring the ones they love. Vday is not only for couples! Its for family and friends too! People tend to forget and this could be a way of reminding them!
  • Salsa workshop/Merengue (probably once of twice per semester)
  • Bachata workshop (Same as salsa)
  • Cinco de mayo workshop
  • Have Independence day workshops for the latino cultures when the days come!
  • Boriqua Week : Including History, Politics, Tainos, Nuyoricans workshop
  • DR week: History, Slavery, Immigration, famous people in DR (<-Idea maybe?)
  • Sex Olympics
  • Why you so ghetto
  • Sports in Latin America
  • Flag Football
  • Softball bbq
  • NERF GUN WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <-Pleaseeee lol
  • steal the bacon
  • Kickball
  • Volleyball
  • Poconos trip
  • Broadway show trip (?)
  • Latinos in the media workshop
  • Novela workshop
  • Machismo vs Marianismo workshop <-i probably spelt that wrong lol
  • Benefit concert (?)
  • Day of Dignity
  • AIDS Walk <- that would be cool
  • Movie night in BC (Latino movies like illegal tender, dance with with me with chayanne and other movies etc)
  • Latino stereotype workshop
  • Coat drive
  • Can drive
  • Bake sales/candy sales
  • Member auction- We can auction out members to raise money for something. The members can go on a date or spend the day with that person. I was talking to Cesar about this and he has a lot of ideas. He's done an event like before and he knows the way an event like this works out. He says it would be better to do this during the fall. It could be a collab with his frat because there are some gorgeous guys there...just saying lol
  • Baseball trips! Why havent we done this yet?! Lets go Yankees! Lets go mets! whoop whoop!
  • Birthdays! - celebrating the birthdays of EVERY member. A cupcake for the birthday girl/boy, music, dancing, and games
  • Spring break trip?
  • Dominos! workshop / game day or night. We can even order dominos pizza lol
  • Poetry Slam team Collabs! Maybe 2 or 3 each semester?
  • Dream Team collabs
  • El Barrio workshop/trip - The history and significance to el barrio. And a trip to its museum!
  • Comedy hour?
  • Spa trip (after either midterm or finals)
  • Bowling trip!
  • Old school latinos vs LGBTA workshop - How old school latinos feel about this community, the struggles, speakers maybe?
  • Interracial relationships workshop ? (how latino families feel when son/daughter dates out the latino community. How it feels to be the latino dating a white/black etc family...etc etc ideas open of course)
  • Latinos and teen pregnancy ? (this could just be a topic that can be spoken in the club rooms if there isnt much to say)
  • Young Lords workshop - Cesar says he has connections...so we can probably do a collab
  • Ice skating trip?
  • Dialects in the Latino Community workshop
  • The evolution of Latino dances workshop (like el choque and sapito and all that dumb shit lol)
  • Aryeto
  • Salsa party Trip in Taino towers
  • The big one is that i want to make a trip to PR...but we need to do a lot of fundraising etc. We also have to find a cause to help there etc. This is mostly for the PR community. yeah lol An email would be written soon!

Thats all i have so far lol

Feel free to add/change whatever to it

With the problems thats going on in Puerto Rico, NOOOOOO bad idea for
the moment. The drug probelm that's going on in PR is aweful, and I'm
thinking about everyone safety.I, personally will be too scared to
leave the hotel lol. The timing is wrong, BUT instead a trip to DR
would be better in timing. But if we're going to do that, we have to
start fundraising as soon as the semester starts, and a possiblity
that we won't do the annuel pocono trip (unless we have some major
cash to do both). But I LOVE IT.

We should also do a workshop " Dia de Las Hermanas Mirabal"
celebrating their legacy, and promoting Anti-Women Violence Day which
is on Nov.5 in DR.
-Starting up a penpal in PR
-Charities. (Making gifts for St.Judes, etc. It'd be perfect going
along with the benefit concert)
-Cultural Dance. (perfomancing a dance solo or in a group of their
native country.
-Breast Cancer Walk
-"Who Would You Date" game. A contestant having 3 options not knowing
who is who, choosing who'll (s)he date based on their answers.

Well this is what Yanney and I have thought of so far. More ideas
coming soon...

Id honestly would rather go to DR but everyone was saying PR because it was cheaper. Idk, i be happy with either. But it would be easier for us if we did DR because medo has done it before and we can just sort of do what the past has done but of course BETTER. A trip to DR i think is better than the poconos lol idk maybe its just cuz i like traveling and ive ALWAYS wanted to go to DR lol

Me gusta your ideas!

Ary-always on point you have ideas for daysssss! And Yazmine lol I
love your ideas too, it made me think of doing the "how well do you
know so and so" like when you just get married and you are asked
questions and you have to write them on a board or something-just a
thought.
And I'm thinking a sort olympics type day, in my high school all of
the seniors had MurrowBowl and basically teams would have different
games to choose from (an outside event) and winners would be marked
until there was a final few. Games included steal the bacon, football,
track, hoola hooping, soccer, tug of war, etc.
Lastly I think we could a scavenger hunt because those are always fun!

& regarding the idea to go international lol-the Poconos would still
happen we can't take from the budget of that event, the Trip to PR/DR
would have to be fund raised entirely, and although you have a point
Yazzy I honestly there's always a problem in our native countries a
lot of what people might make the hype about comes from politics, but
it's whatever you guys decide lol. My point was the prices, a trip to
PR is 293 and a trip to DR is 390 from orbitz two weeks before second
semester, spring break prices are much too high. Either way though I
know it's going to be a great time and hopefully we can figure out who
we would like to start fundraising for schools, hospitals, etc.

If we're not to sure where we wanna go we can have a poll among the rest of the club..that way they can say they have a voice early..and it will help bring interest and give us a bigger reason to focus on certain aspects of the country..I remember when I went to china I had to go to seminars about the class and culture..you can't walk into a country blind feel me? This year we goin shake up all of BC

Well of course we have to prep the members. Honestly i think this is how it should be : it could be the top 10 most active members who've been showing a lot of motivation, preparation and hard work with the fundraising and the club itself. I say 10 only to give people something to fight for lol.

I was talking to Randy about it yesterday and he say that we should build ourselves up and work in our community first before jumping that step. And i completely agree with him. He wrote:

"1) It'sd better to start here with the diasporic community in NY
2) I actually do, but it's way too much content to say over FB
3) I'll gladly help anyway I can.
4) One to start with is the Puerto Rican Family Institute, based here in New York.  " and

" Ok here's a way to do this:

1) Fundraising. This is highly important and without nothing can happen. I mean true fundrasing not little events.
2) Long term planning. Find organizations that interests you (and the club). Get the club truly together (no bullshit/true unity) and that way so much more can be done.
3) Networking. Get close with these organizations and make an impact. Make PRA a political pulpit, and it'll go far from there.
First start with PRA itself and build a reputation (as mentioned earlier) then we network with other similarly minded clubs and organizations. Start with other CUNY campuses, then branch onto Catholic Universities, etc. "

Maybe if we're lucky, this trip can expand to other orgs in other schools? idk, we'll see when the time comes. Worse comes to worse, we push the trip a year later to fund-raise more money!

Ary you have some great ideas on the that list, and I am glad to see
that all of you are thing. Puerto Rican Heritage month is November ,
so the history week I did this year will take place that month. Also
yes, we should acknowledge days of revolution or significant events
like El Grito De Lares. Yazmine is also right, I really think we
should have a workshop about the Miribal sisters for next year as
well. As for trips, as some of you have already pointed out, a trip
to PR or DR would have to be entirely founded. Unfortunately, do to
safety issues there is no way that we could schedule that trip through
the school. As it is they barely want to let us go to the poconos
alone, so as far as school approval goes we will not get it. We would
have to fundraise on a major scale, and I am sure if this is something
we decide to do we can get it done. IF we can manage to get a
professor involved, and cover their costs, this could help our
chances. Also, we would not have to be scared to go to Puerto Rico. As
with anywhere else, you have your good parts and bad parts, and
visiting historical sites, and having a guide (especially a Professor)
would help a lot. Things like a curfew, and not going off on our own
etc. will be important for safety as well.

As far as the committees go, if set a goal like top ten members, we
are already assuming that we will have this resource. By trying to
make it competitive we are assuming that we'll actually have members
who to fight for these positions, which is something I have yet to
witness as far as committees are concerned lol. The committees should
definitely be made up of students who care, but in someway we can also
use this as a valuable resource for those that do not normally get
involved. It could definitely be a way to reach students who are not
active , give them responsibility, and generate an interest and real
care for this club by letting them know that they matter to, and that
everyone has a place, once again we do not want to alienate anyone.

Also, as it has been said, it is very important for us to start
helping out in our community. I have a few ideas for this as well, and
a couple of organizations like ALJA, which is an organization that has
famous latin jazz musicians teaching music instruments to low income
youth in New York City in a time when public arts programs have been
greatly diminished. I have more, but as usual ideas are welcome :]

I also have a good friend in P.R.I.D.E , Puerto Ricans for Involvement
Development and Enlightenment. I have been speaking with them and we
are looking to come together for an event. Of course we should
continue to branch out to other schools to work with these types of
orgs.

anyway thats all for now, talk to you guys soon

Lets not rule out Hispanic heritage month though! Not only are we covering other latino cultures but we can take this opportunity to make early connections with the other latino clubs/orgs....and im not talking about hispanic society -_-

We just need to find fun and active ways to make the workshops fun. It cant just be all talking ...but we'll see what happens when it comes :)
I really wanna start planning these events but its too early :'(

Also, This is a stupid question but is there a dominican heritage month?

Yea we will definitely not rule out hispanic heritage month, but thats
a better opportunity to focus on other hispanic cultures whereas
Puerto Rican heritage can month can be specifically dedicated to a
specific history and culture. I believe that some people may consider
February to be the Domincan independence month because of the
Independence day but I am not sure if it is widely observed.

The last week of March is actually Latino heritage week, so that is a perfect time to talk about the country culture, history and etc.

Also the Puerto Rican Day parade is coming up soon, if possible I think we should make a trip there. To see the excitement of the parade, the people, and the music. And we can do the same in August for the Dominican parade.

I actually think the earlier we plan these events, the better. So when the semester start, we already have first dibs on rooms, Facebook invites all ready to be set, and anything else we might need. Better safe than sorry?

This is just an idea of course but since we're reaching out to the community now, should we start volunteering in like soap kitchen during like the holidays. Doing charities are great, but it be cool to be physically active. If everyone wants too. Sometime people forget how fortunate they are until they see someone else who isn't.

sorry for responing so late i finally got access to the google group. Let me just say that the quiz people keep mentioning only applies to the Treasurer and the President. the other thing is once you complete this quiz once you never have to do it again. So the only person that has to take this is Jerron. i will provide the webpage below for Jerron. Everyone else is welcome to take it if they would like to but there is no obligation.

http://clubscript.brooklyn.cuny.edu/Students/club_registration.php

this is the page create a login and finish the test at the end and please print it out. it is always good to keep a hard copy proof. thank you

i think all the event ideas that have been suggested are good and i can't wait till we actually put them into motion. in regards to the international trip as chris mentioned it will be very hard to get the school to sponsor such event. we may get them to sponsor the supplies that we want to send but as for flights and rooming they will not cover this at all. i will speak to the medical brigade and see what they do and the process they have to go through. i love the idea but please do not put your hopes up if the trip is not done next year. i do believe we should focus more on things to build the club up such as the PRA monthly Magazine, and Medo's end of Brecha. i have old ones to look at as a reference for next year.

On another not i've done it before and i think we should do it again, whether or not we have events set up we should just book rooms for the entire semester and work from there. the charity i have been pushing for, for  years and i think getting involved in the community is a great idea. i also agree about the parades is a good idea, PRA in the past has actually been apart of it but they did the booking a year in advance so we should look at that for next year. on another note i think the committees are a must whether or not it has worked in the past we should still attempt to make it work.

i have more ideas but i have a headache so i'll get back to you all . lol

Yea ary do not worry this will all be done soon enough. I am more than willing to have people over :) i will say personally I love these clubs and have given a lot of my time and effort for the past three years to the clubs and I’ve just been working my ass off to make everything possible. So I do want to say I will be taking a little break over the summer to finally focus on myself and not the organization. I will be gone the entire month June and I will be trying my best to keep informed with the emails when I can.

We can do this you guys and I honestly feel for the first time in 3 years that I have been on eboard that a positive and  more proactive club and membership is possible. This year all of you on eboard show astonishing motivation and initiative for the success and improvement of these clubs, which is great and will help us get far. That being said

which is why I feel that my presence isn’t necessary. That being said I will be stepping down and allowing anyone interested to run for the president position. I will still be around but as a mentor and for guidance.

Well it saddens me to hear you say that but I am sure that everybody
understands. For now as Vice President Chris Vidals will have to stand
in your place until we find a more permanent person to fill the
position, if we find someone. We understand that you are going to busy
and respect that, but do not say that your presence is not necessary
because I know that everyone can agree that that is simply untrue.

Moving on to the department, I was there to speak with the chair
person yesterday about somethings that are going to be really helpful.
For one, I got the schedule of classes for next semester you guys can
look over, I know that some of you are already enrolled in some PRLS
classes so that will make it easier for us to advertise and represent
the club within the framework of PRLS. I am going to upload the pdf to
group momentarily.

Two other things. I spoke to the chair about volunteer opportunities
for hispanic/latino communities. She gave me a quick run down of some
great organizations and presented some ideas. In the past we have had
days where members of hispanic/latino organizations in high schools
come to visit our school to see how we do things, and what these
college orgs are like. Typically  they have what is known as a shadow
day, where the highschool student will "shadow" the college student
through out the day. I feel like this could definitely be a wonderful
opportunity.

Lastly, I do not believe that any of you are aware that our school is
a HACU participant. HACU is the Hispanic Association of Colleges and
Universities that offers a multitude of opportunities from
scholarships to internships. As of right now they are looking to have
a Hispanic College quiz game show that will be aired during Hispanic
Heritage month on U.S. television. People are chosen at random, and
are given a coach appointed by the school who is a professor, and a
couple of quiz books to study from. I have decided that I am going to
apply, and if any of you are interested I am going to post the
information for this opportunity as well.

Also, the chair person of the department, Maria-Perez y Gonzalez's
email is Mar...@brooklyn.cuny.edu. All of you should send an email to
her stating your positions and basically just a little introduction of
yourself, so please see to that asap, AND let me know when you all
have done this.

So that is about all for now, if anyone has any questions just hit me
up.
-Chris

Hey everyone, one more piece of information. This is an email from the department:

Please join us on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 from 1-2 pm in the PRLS Department office (1205 Boylan Hall) in preparation for planning the 7th Annual Possible Dream Encuentro 2012 to be held November 15, 2012 from 11 am – 10 pm. You can be involved in many aspects of this spectacular event that draws 400-600 people—students, faculty, staff, administration, CUNY colleagues, parents, and community members.

I spoke to Professor Gonzalez and she has invited us to attend the meeting. The Encuentro is large ceremony that the department holds every year, last year Josh and I played at it and the event was pretty nice. They are going to need volunteers and such so they start planning early. If any of you can make it to this please let me know, if not that's okay too, but remember it is never too early to start to get to know the people from the department, especially for those of you who are planning to major in PRLS. Remember everyone to let me know once you have emailed Gonzalez!

Thats all for now :]

If I'm done with finals and don't work around that time, I'm definitely going.
