Hi Folks,

At the legal meeting yesterday at Clare's (for our past sit-in demonstration) we also discussed the forums. The LG forum for Sept. 6th is going well, everyone has graciously volunteered again to do the same jobs, and we have 6 confirmed guests:
Lyla Berg
Jon Riki Karamatsu
Adrienne King
Gary Hooser
Brian Schatz
Lynn Finnegan

'Olelo is still a big question mark. I went and paid them a visit on Saturday, but they didn't know yet whether they could cover either forum. The person I need to talk to is Amy Tamarabuchi, and she was out. She was out for vacation during the planning of these events, and during the BOE forum Justin gave me the impression that the LG forum was more likely than Gov. But the guys yesterday had it the other way around. They were struggling to find cameramen and airdates (the holiday is a problem for labor, and the airdates are few because the primary is coming up Sept 18). The bottom line is that we don't know, maybe we can get 1 volunteer cameraperson, but also Amy didn't know about airdates with the primary coming up Sept. 18. I did tell her that these were the only forums on education, and that there might still be interest in the general because we have candidates from both parties (but maybe not:).  If anyone can help, please let me know!

Anyway, we hope that the other media will be there even if 'Olelo can't make it. I would hope that they still cover education even after the furloughs!

We also discussed the governor's forum on Sept. 12. Those present wanted to go forward, since it seems like an important public service, it will allow the candidates to talk about their vision for education, and everything was already set up and in place (this was a pretty substantial amount of work to get everything arranged). We've invited the minor candidates, and John Carroll (R) accepted right away. I'm sure we'll have an interesting array of candidates.

So please help us get the word out!  I just got an email from the League of Women Voters, and they're going to put our event on their website.

Thanks!
Marguerite

Two More Candidate Forums on EDUCATION

The recent Furlough Friday crisis has reminded us all that our elected leaders matter!  Come and hear what candidates for the offices most directly responsible for Hawaii’s public education system have to say in response to our most pressing questions.

• Lieutenant Governor candidates, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mon. Sept. 6, Labor Day
• Governor candidates, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sun. Sept 12

Venue: Architecture Auditorium, University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The public (parents, students, concerned citizens) are invited to submit questions at www.sos808.org.

The moderator will be Neal Milner, former ombuds for UH Manoa, professor of Political Science, and political commentator. The Architecture Building is on University Ave, across from the Atherton YMCA (corner of Metcalf). Parking (street, campus) is free on Sunday and Holidays.

All forums are free and open to the public. The events will be broadcast on ‘Olelo. Please check www.sos808.org for updates.

Hosted by Save Our Schools Hawaii, the committee organizing a Hawai’i chapter of Parents for Public Schools, and the American Studies Graduate Students Association of UH.

I can do leis and introduce Neal for both.  I may be a little tired on the 12th, though, because I'm slated for a triathlon that morning.

Cheers,

Jill
