Hi all,
So.... we had a meeting about our future and kind of agreed to continue with new rules. Below how I remember them.... Chris, did your EEE explode and lose the notes?

1) Each meeting has a pre-selected moderator.
2) Moderator is responsible for collecting and sending material about the pattern well in advance to all of us
3) Moderator will make sure that the meetings start and end on time and makes sure the conversation stays with subject
4) We will have two one-hour sessions during each night, both about separate subjects moderated by separate people: First a GoF pattern at 18:30 ("basics" session), then a fifteen minute break and a second session on "advanced" topic. The advanced topic was kind of left open but will be  studying one of the following books: DDD, PoEAA or xUnit Patterns. The sessions will be strictly time limited! Free conversation can continue after...
5) Being strict still means that these meetings are voluntary :) Also, be free to skip first or second session if you are not interested.
6) We will start a calendar to keep information about meeting times and moderators. This has been started at Google calendars, now I will need everybody to send me a private email to tell which email address would you like to use to edit the calendar. I am not sure but it might be that you need a gmail or google app address. You can find the calendar by searching for ppppkh...
7) Something else?

Now, next tuesday is already very close and we don't know moderators for the night nor the advanced subject. For the latter, I spent couple of ours with the xUnit pattern book we all thought was a good idea to study. My conclusion is that if you have done TDD/unit tests before for couple of months, going through many of the patterns/smells etc in the book will be rather boring. Thus, the biggest benefit I see from that book is that it gives names to test patterns... the stuff in the book did not really seem to be so difficult to grasp that it would gain much from discussion. Thus, I propose we take DDD or PoEAA instead. What do you think?

Cheers,
Miika

Hi all,

-Miika, could you please add t...@moorwebsoftware.com and also post the
URL to the calendar?
-We planned to buy a horn (or some alternative device for the classic
chairman's hammer).
-I am probably not able to make it to all GoF sessions, but can be
there to moderate a session every now and then. Let's fill in the
calendar and see how it goes.
-I believe the last pattern we studied was the Decorator. That would
mean that the next pattern would be Composite if we stick to the
original NY GoF study group's guide.
-There was a suggestion made during the last meeting to follow a
different order of studying the patterns. Not sure if anything was
decided. For now I would suggest to stick to the original schedule and
follow the NY group's order, unless there are any objections.
-I believe that there not a moderator for tonight. Could we defer
studying the Composite pattern until next week so that we can tonight
finalize last week's discussion. I can offer to be the moderator next
week for the composite pattern. Chris, that alternative Design
Patterns book you suggested to replace/use next to the original GoF
book, do you have a soft copy of that so that i can use that to
prepare for next week?
-The advanced topic is also undecided. Maybe we could do a final vote
tonight and also schedule moderators?
-We will need to give 24 hours notice if we want to use the Freebird
meeting room upstairs. I will call Chris and Miika now to check who
will be there tonight from their respective companies. If there are
enough people i will book the room. Otherwise i guess/hope we can use
the room downstairs.
-I know it is completely voluntary, however, we need to book the room
in advance if we want to have our meetings at Freebird's. Not sure how
to deal with this as we cannot guaranty enough upcome of people.

Thanks,

Tim

Sorry I couldn't make the meeting last night, but I hear we are
scheduled to start with the new format next week, with GoF patterns in
the first session and Enterprise Patterns in the second. Do we have
any volunteers for moderators?

We should try to start filling up the new Google calendar at least a
month ahead of time. I don't mind being a moderator for on of the
sessions next week.

Also are we starting the GoF book from the beginning? Are we following
the New York study book like before? Or are we going to try something
fresh like following the Head First book (we now have a full soft
copy)?
