If anyone cannot make it to Otaki but will be taking part in one of the
TPPA protests I have cobbled together a flyer that can be handed out to
participants and passers-by.
It is based on the Wellington chapters declaration and a leaflet I hand
out to people who express an interest in the Party.

It has a creative commons licence so you can adapt it if you want. This
might be necessary if you are outside Wellington, as as far as I know.
only Wellington has taken a stand on the issue.

If you want to improve it then please send me a copy

Cheers,

Did anyone go to any of the anti-TPPA rallies while we were at Pirate Camp?

One of the issues with the TPPA, and "free trade" agreements in
general, is that are being negotiated using powers and practices
traditionally used for negotiated treaties. If two states are
negotiating to avoid a war, or for mutual defence, it may well be
appropriate for those talks and drafts of the treaty to be secret.
Because revealing the details may compromise someone's safety, and
because the content of a treaty is an agreement about what state
governments/ military will and won't do.

A trade agreement does not have anywhere near the same level of
sensitivity, and the contents are often about regulating what private
citizens can and can't do in their own country, usually to protect the
"investments" of billionaires and multinational companies in a country
from the free and democratic decisions of that country's population ie
us. Yet "free trade" agreements are negotiated with the same secrecy
and lack of democratic oversight as treaties. Negotiators can present
them as a fait accompli to Parliament, who realistically can only
rubber stamp them. This must change! Trade negotiations must be opened
up to full public debate about the pros and cons of offering up this
or that, in exchange for this or that.
