Oh yes, National Museum is really central!
So back to NASes it is somewhat expensive but keep in mind that adding
4x 4TB or 8TB HDD is going to be expensive (1x4TB ~ $130, 1x8TB ~$300)
So now looking at the "empty" box meaning casing + power supply + MB +
CPU + RAM it usually should cost around $300. Now CPU/RAM additinal
AES-NI encryption support and maybe SSD cache can definitely bring the
cost up.
I have a cheap Synology with 1GB or RAM which I'm using for backups
mainly and a few applications but as it's a non Intel CPU and not a lot
of ram I cannot do VM, even docker is an issue (and probably not supported).
Actually the topic is very interesting as depending on what you do with
your NAS you should (for instance) avoid doing backups and running 24/7
surveillance on the same box as surveillance with continuously write on
the disks and kill them a lot faster.
I checked the entry price for FreeNAS boxes and the cheapest one with: -
Intel dual core C3333 (couldn't find it anywhere else)
- 8GB RAM
- AES-NI
- 4 hot swappable bay (not sure I need hot swap for example)
- 2 cache slots I believe (description is not so clear)
- Single RJ-45 Gb port
- An apparently nice casing ;-)
Price : $750.
At this price you have a nice Synology with Intel CPU and dual Gb port.
Probably not the same specifications though, this is something I really
need to dig into. The software also is different and has some
limitations that FreeNAS will not have.
- CPU Intel Celeron J3455
- 8GB
- AES-NI
- Hardware transcoding engine 4K max res.
- 4 hot swappable bays
- 2 NVMe slots for cache
- 2 RJ-45 Gb ports
Price: ~ $617
Power consumption should also be lower than the 1st box.
All those pricing are from the US. So adding shipping and taxes...
And finally there is a comparison here between the same Synology model
(DS918+) and a DIY one:
https://nascompares.com/2018/05/27/synology-ds918-versus-custom-freenas-build/
So I am at this stage :-) and would be happy to hear what your friend
did. And yes the whole box with the 4+HDD will cost a minimum of U$700 I
believe (and that is probably the bottom pricing - all depends on
RAM/HDD and more).
Thank you for sharing the interest !
