Here's the programme for the first Phnom Penh Arts Festival, starting
this Thursday at Veal Menh (in front of the National Museum). All
events are free so please pass this mail round to your friends.

Thursday, 30 March

Opening - Sampeah Cru 5.00 - 6.00 pm
The opening ceremony to honour lost artists and teachers.

Cardamom Picking Dance and Preying Mantis Dance
Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, Department of Performing Arts 6.00
- 6.15 pm
Two folkloric dances: an ethnic Por dance from Pursat, traditionally
performed before going to the mountains to collect cardamom, and a
dance from Svay Rieng, performed after the harvest.

Prince Tennavung and Princess Nearng Pouv
Phnom Penh Department of Culture and Fine Arts 6.15 - 9.15 pm
Lakoun Bassac story of a king without a son, who invites 101 kingdoms
to send their sons to compete for the hand of his youngest daughter.


Friday, 31 March

Popular and folkloric dances
Cambodian Living Arts 5.30 - 6.00 pm
Advanced students of renowned performer Ieng Sithul's class perform.

Ungrateful Son
Apsara Arts Association 6.00 - 8.00 pm
Student lakoun Yike story of a family in which one of two sons becomes
a millionaire, but is punished when he rejects his family.

The Masters
Cambodian Living Arts 8.00 - 9.30 pm
Ieng Sithul (Wedding Music), Kung Nai (Chapei), Noy Samnang (Mohori),
and Ouch Savy Ayai)- favourites of Khmer stage and television - perform
song and comedy

PHUM STYLE Phare Ponleu Selpak 6.00 - 7.00 pm
What happens when modernity comes to a rural village? A circus
performance involving Diabolo, American roll, juggling, rings,
contortion, acrobatics, and dance.

Les Balayetts Phare Ponleu Selpak 7.00 - 7.30 pm
Street Theatre. Time to clean? Welcome Les Balayetts! They will
seriously tidy this area, for it is their duty. Maybe they'll even
clean your brains a bit, on their way to ultimate cleanliness...

Sbaek Thom Cambodian Living Arts 7.30 - 9.00 pm
The Wat Bo troupe from Siem Reap presents a dramatic firelight
production of classic Khmer puppetry/dance enacting scenes from the
Reamker.


Sunday, 2 April

Les Stranges Visitores Phare Ponleu Selpak 6.00 - 6.30 pm
Street Theatre. Strange visitors appear in your surroundings. How
strange they look to you. But you also look strange to them. Who is
normal? Aren't we all strangers to each other?

The Return Epic Arts 6.30 - 7.10 pm
Cambodian and European artists, including professional disabled dancers
present a dance, music, and theatre performance based loosely on the
Cambodian folk story, Wolf Mountain.

Street Life Krom Skor Sovanna Phum 7.10 - 7.30 pm
A compilation of drum music exploring new ideas in Cambodian music
while staying in touch with tradition.

Roussey Deyk Sovanna Phum Khmer Art Association 7.30 - 8.30 pm
Original Cambodian creation mixing different artists (dancers, shadow
puppeteers, circus artists and musicians) and fusing Khmer traditional
forms with contemporary themes and choreography.
