WAUKESHA, Wis., Oct. 27, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Generac Grid Services, part of Generac Power Systems, Inc., (NYSE: GNRC) a leading global designer and manufacturer of energy technology solutions and other power products, announced the company has been selected for negotiations by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to receive a $50 Million grant to enhance the U.S. power grid's ability to deliver affordable, clean energy to lower income homeowners in Massachusetts.

Funding from this grant would be used to install Generac's suite of whole-home energy solutions in homes across the state, including behind-the-meter wi-fi thermostats and batteries, and optimize the use of electric heat pumps in combination with batteries and thermostats to improve reliability for residents.

The project will demonstrate Generac's capacity to integrate multiple energy technologies to support residents, while providing valuable grid services to benefit both the grid and the residents. It will exhibit how efficient building electrification is possible while minimizing system overloads, reliability issues, and the need for infrastructure upgrades. Generac will utilize its advanced Concerto technology to aggregate and manage the energy assets as a virtual power plant (VPP).

"We'd like to thank the DOE for this opportunity and look forward to working with the state and our partners to lead the evolution to more resilient, efficient and sustainable energy solutions for the residents of Massachusetts," said Aaron Jagdfeld, president and chief executive officer of Generac.

This project will engage local community leaders to bring benefits such as increased resiliency and job opportunities for communities with projects and will develop a replicable model that can be scaled to communities across the country. Along with providing reliability and economic benefits, the project will support Massachusetts' decarbonization and GHG reduction goals.

The funds are part of the federal Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Program, which seeks to enhance grid flexibility and improve the resilience of the power system against growing threats of extreme weather and climate change. Funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and administered by DOE's Grid Deployment Office, the GRIP program leverages federal, state and private investments to ensure that communities across the nation have a reliable grid that is prepared for extreme weather while also delivering affordable, clean energy and creating robust local opportunities for economic investment and jobs. The state of Massachusetts, electric utilities and energy efficiency program managers in the state will play a critical role in this project by providing incentives for electric heat pump installations through the MassSaves program.

EGLE home energy rebates applications are targeted to open in the Fall of 2024. EGLE hosted in-person and virtual engagements sessions across Michigan to prepare for federal home energy rebate funding in March and April. EGLE continues to seek stakeholder input on both the design and implementation of the rebate programs. EGLE is seeking to diversify input, to discuss localized context, and to accommodate those that could not make regional in-person meetings by hosting virtual sessions and accepting online feedback.

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) authorized the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to carry out the Home Energy Rebate Programs to help households save money on energy bills, improve energy efficiency, and reduce indoor and outdoor air pollution. The Home Energy Rebate Programs consists of two programs: the Home Efficiency Rebates (IRA Section 50121) and the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (IRA Section 50122).

The Home Efficiency Rebates will provide funding to lower the upfront cost of whole-home energy efficiency upgrades in single-family and multi-family homes aiding retrofitting and electrification efforts. The Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates will help finance the upfront cost of efficient electric technologies in single-family and multi-family homes.

Applications opened for program administrators (e.g., States and Indian Tribes) on July 27, 2023 and close January 31, 2025. Below is the current estimated timeline for the rollout of Michigan's Home Energy Rebate Programs.

The specific program design and requirements for the Michigan Home Energy Rebates Program has not yet been designed, and the information below summarizes the maximum allowed rebate amounts defined in the law for different types of home efficiency and electrification projects.

Our Fixed Backup Power (FBP) program offers pre-selected, eligible customers permanently installed stationary generators that can power your home during a PSPS or other type of power outage. There are no fees for participating customers, and the generator will be installed free-of-charge.

Eligible customers are informed about the program and directed to complete an application (see link above). Accepted applications will be routed to our approved and Generac certified installers for further scheduling and installation.

Eligible customers are informed about the program and directed to complete an application. Accepted applications will be routed to our approved and Generac certified installers for further scheduling and installation.

A certified installer will contact eligible customers within 7 business days to schedule an onsite assessment at the installation location. During the assessment, the installer will conduct preliminary design and evaluation of your location to identify any potential challenges or special requirements. At the end of the appointment, the certified installer will provide you with a participation agreement that outlines the equipment and terms & conditions.

A pre-construction site visit will occur 1 to 3 days prior to each installation. Installers will finalize any preparation for the site and share details about what you can expect over the course of the installation. The installation process itself can take up to 2 days. Quality inspections, customer demonstrations and training on how to maintain the new generator properly and safety will take at this time.

SDG&E works with Generac Power Systems to install the permanent standby generators. Eligible customers will receive an appropriately sized generator depending on site needs, typically the Generac 22kW Response Series Generator which is displayed in the picture above. Once your enrollment is confirmed, your Generac Certified Installer will be able to set up a house generator assessment and will be able to answer any specific questions regarding the generator, installation, and maintenance.
