That looks to happen when we are trying to find the median of two codes and either of those bit-encoded states = 0 (or, no states present in the assignment). This definitely shouldn't happen, but is caused by something higher-up.

What kind of alphabet are you processing? Sequential, Level, BitSet? 

and what kind of data? single sequences, partitioned, auto-partitioned, ... ?
