Hello,

First I hope this is not showing as one line.

I am looking at the progress bar as a possible solution for some of the long
retrievals and processes. Generally I put up a response window and close it
after the process is done or just use the microhelp. I'd like to see about
incorporating the PFC progressbar into the application to be used throughout.

I've played around with the examples to see how to set the various properties of
the bar. You know look and feel. What I'd like to find out is how others have
implemented this object and if they find it more useful than the microhelp. The
examples are very simplistic so trying to figure a way to incorporate this into
a retrieval process or treeview insertitem process has my head spinning. And to
do it cleanly.

Please let me hear from you.

TIA

Daria,

Chris Gross wrote an article on this topic in the June issue of the
PowerBuilder Developers Journal. His method is to use a shared object to
handle the progress window so that it doesn't interfere with the actual
process which is executing. Its a good solution. Read it if you can. Take a
look at www.sys-con.com and follow the links to PBDJ. If its not available
there send me an email.

Thank you John for your reply. I'll have a look tomorrow and let you know if
I have difficulties.

John,

I dowloaded what I found on the site but the text files seem to be corrupted. It
was a 7-6.zip file with 5 text files. It looks like carriage return symbols. I
can see some text but it's not that distinguishable.

TIA

Hi Daria,

I'm not sure whats going on with the file you found on the sys-con website
but you can grab the code that goes along with the article from my website
(www.geocities.com/~cgross1). The code doesn't really explain itself to
well, it would be much easier to figure out if you were able to get a copy
of the PBDJ. Either way the code will give a start.

Chris

ps. You should really think about subscribing yourself to PBDJ, its really
a great resource for PB developers.

Hi Chris,

I'm working with version 6.5 do you have a sample version in 6. The datawindow
seems to have items in it that is 7 specific. Exporting it and changing it does
no good in addition to one object that has a reference of an object of
hpb_process.

TIA

hpb is a horizontal progressbar -- a new control in PB7. If you want this
functionality in PB6.5 you'll have to use a wrapper for the Win32
progressbar (look at http://www.freepb.com), or the PFC implementation.

Sorry its taken me so long to get back to this. As Roy pointed out, the app
uses the new progressbar controls in PB7 and unfortunately I don't have a
version for 6.5. Let me know if you're still struggling with this and I'll
see what I can do.

At my company, we've just released the latest version of our software (PB
built) and so I'm taking all the vacation time they'll let me!

hmm... I wonder what the waters like at the beach...
