Why manipulation of LONG column is allowed in DataWindow but not CLOBs?
You are forced to use SELECTBLOB AND UPDATEBLOB in case of CLOB. LONG
column can be included in the SELECT in datawindow sql painter while a
CLOB can not be. You can manipulate both of these the same way using
SQLPLUS.

Thanks for any reply.

Actually, selectblob and updateblob are the methods you should use with long
columns as well.

Thanks for reply Bruce,

Is there any problem selecting it in sql painter? It removes a lot of problems
especially in Web dw. The thing that confuses me that it works the same way in
SQLPLUS but not in PB.

You really shouldn't be able to select it in the sql painter either. There's
a limit on the amount of data that you can manipulate in that column using
standard SQL. Same with SQL Plus. Same with PL/SQL for that matter, though
the limit is a bit higher.

Thanks bruce,

I am sorry but I wanted to know why selecting a LONG column is allowed in SQL
Painter but not CLOB. I think they should be handled the same way. I can limit the
size in dw e.g. 32K.

Bruce,

I tried using only SQL and for a 32K string, it didn't give my any problem. I will
try to test for more than that. I tried it from Web. It's an html datawindow. It
doesn't use any selectblob/updateblob. It is a LONG column. This one works without
any problem and that's the reason I believe it should work for CLOB too.

Thanks for your help.

How are you going to update it? Literal SQL is only going to take 4K.
