PB 7.0.2 Oracle Server: 8.0.5

Is there any way ( other than checking file existence ) to check whether
client is using Oracle 7.3 or 8.x? Some users are still using Oracle Client
7.3 that may have the limitation of VARCHAR2 at 2000 rather than 4000 in
Oracle 8 client.

Search through the registries and seems not having a definite key to tell...
thanks!!!

Look in the registry for hklm\software\oracle\net80. If it doesn't exist,
you don't have net8 client installed.
The other way you can check is by looking in the files
%oracle_directory%\orainst win95.rgs (for W9X) or nt.rgs (for NT4/W2K).
These are plain text files showing the installed components.
Checking the client though isn't good enough. I can have a net8.x client
and access an 7.x database. So really, you need to check at the database
level. The easiest is:
select * from v$version

Hi Terry,

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately the key in registry didn't catch Oracle
8i client. Is there another way for 8i?

Thanks,

If you are checking what driver they are connecting to the database with,
then look in the transaction object properties. But if you need to know
what version of oracle the database is running then I think you can get that
information from a SQL select.

Check if the key hklm\oracle\software\inst_loc exists. That basically tells
you that 8i is installed. Using the value of that key, you can then
optionally check that it contains the subdirectory
..\components\oracle.client
