How do you default the Retrieval Argument, so that the prompt will default
to today's date?

To the best of my knowledge, this is not possible. There is no way to
"seed" the values in the retrieval arguements.
A good alternative is to create a small executable program in PB or
any other language which allows the user to select values, and then
sends these values as command line arguements to the report you wish
to run.
