Hello everyone,

As you may already know, we’ve been up to Push Europe’s latest campaign Unblock Our Future. We are calling on the EU to act immediately on climate change in line with its moral and historical responsibility. We’re also putting pressure on the Polish government by demanding them to stop blocking European progress on climate.

Policy papers are taking us in circles. In Brussels you’ll hear endless talk about ‘potential’ and ‘non-binding’ resolutions, but in reality, Europe probably won’t commit to further greenhouse gases reductions for another decade. This is largely down to the devastating success of the corporate lobbyists.

In times when the Arctic ice reached record lows, when hundreds of millions around the world are already suffering from the increasingly chaotic weather and when we also know that we face a major food crisis in 2013 due to massive failures in harvests across the globe - the EU’s apathetic stance on climate change is hugely unacceptable.

Our role, here at grassroots level, is to act: act now, and demand immediate European action. With the help of Push Europe’s campaign pack, this is easier than you think!

We have now completed our action toolkit (hurray!) and we invite you to:

(1) read it,
(2) circulate it to your networks and social media contacts, and
(3) PLAN YOUR ACTION! Then let us know what you are planning (via this quick form) so that we can help you and join your voice to others across the continent.

And GOOD NEWS: the action date is flexible, so you can plan one to suit your timetable, or to match a key date on the political calendar. Here is a quick overview of the climate world over the next few months (a more visual timeline is in the Toolkit itself!):

  • NOW ---> 25th October:
Email and Photo actions telling Donald Tusk (Prime Minister of Poland) not to block European decisions on climate change. On the 25th of October, European Environment Ministers will meet to discuss Europe’s position on climate. It is vital that Poland doesn’t block progressive proposals. This part is easy - all you need is a pen, paper and camera. You can find sample slogans in the Toolkit. Upload an image here. Simple!
Read more about Poland’s ‘blocking’ history here.
  • 12 - 18 November
    Global Actions for Climate Justice:
Hundreds of southern movements and northern organisations will join forces this week to mobilise a million people across the globe demanding European action on climate change. There are plenty of ways you can get involved, see the toolkit for ideas, and feel free to contact us at act...@pusheurope.eu with your questions!
  • 26 November - 8 December
    > UN climate talks, Doha, and
    > Qatar in Brussels (1 - 8 December):
During the talks we aim to build capacity for activists in Europe by organising a week-long climate justice convergence in Brussels. Here we’ll link up with activists in Doha and organise joint actions inside the negotiating halls and back in Brussels. If you are interested in joining the event in Brussels, read more about it and register! If you cannot travel to Brussels, don’t worry, you can join us online. Email actio...@qatar-in-brussels.org with your location and availability.

The time has come to stand up and demand immediate European action on climate change. It is time for long-lasting, real commitment to tackle the crisis - a 40% domestic emissions cut would be the most effective first step in Europe.

You can also use the campaign as an opportunity to bring people together and organise local action planning assemblies. In the long run, this is a great chance to establish longer-term groups of active people!

>>> Our resources page has many useful bits (like the Blogging Kit and the Donald Mask) which you will find useful for your actions.

>>> Please make sure you register your action with us, so that we can help you promote it around Europe! Photo actions don’t need to be registered - just do as many images as you possibly can, and upload them all on the photo action page.

>>> With the help of our lovely toolkit you can easily put together a physical action in November to show solidarity with Global Actions for Climate Justice.

>>> Feel free to contact your regional coordinator for advice (you can find the list of coordinators on the resources page).

We know, this all sounds like a lot of things at once... But it’s actually VERY EASY to participate and the more people we have the more impact there will be!

For now, please fill out our email action and take 10 minutes to make a photo. (The 10-minute plan from the Tar Sands actions provides a great explanation!) Then tell all your friends about it! ;)

We hope to hear/see/read from you soon!

Please join and help us to UNBLOCK OUR FUTURE!

Thanks,

The Unblock Team
