I am a new to the SDR world so I hope I don't bore you with boring questions.  I have a 940s with serial interface, a serial to USB converter and a ASUS i5 laptop.  I have powerSDR/IF now working with the 940s.  The computer follows the radio commands and visa versa.
Am I able to feed the IF output of the 940s directly to my sound card for the waterfall and the bandwidth portion of the frequency display (SDR/IF) to work?  If so, can someone tell me what isolation methods to use and perhaps a link to show me a schematic on the wiring.  I would rather set up my station this way, for learning purposed and then move to some sort of SDR interface.  I looked at the SoftRock but do not like the narrow frequency coverage of the receivers.  any input on this would be appreciated too.  73

Tony Parks offers a Softrock lite I.F. kit that (when supplied with the appropriate crystal for the Kenwood I.F.) will track the band the radio is on. The only thing that could be an issue with some of the Japanese radios could be using an up conversion scheme with a very high frequency. Some are from 69MHZ to 74MHZ etc. Most of the I.F. kits are used in down conversion schemes where the frequency needs to be in the area of approximately 8 MHZ to 12 MHZ.The reason you need an SDR is because it converts the signal into   I (the in phase audio signal) and the Q (phase inverted quadrature audio signal) from the radios I.F. for the band you are on and sends the converted baseband signal for the soundcard to process. The SDR does not need to have wide bandwidth for this type of pan adapter because it needs to cancel all signals outside of the I.F. and let just the intermediate frequency pass. This task is accomplished with the SDR band pass filter. I hope this info helps. Regards, Roger AA1LY

This makes sense.  I will have to do some studying to fully understand but I'm okay on this for now.  I will order one of the kits and see what happens ... Thank You Roger ... 73

I did just that with my Kenwood TS-2000.
I put an isolation amp between the TS-2000 and the softrock IF receiver.

Give me a call and we can chat about it.

The limiting factor is usually the sound card.  The wider the response of the sound card the more waterfall coverage you will see.  192K is ideal.

The sound cards signal/noise ratio also effects the sensitivity of the receive signal.

But not to worry....  I started out with a pitiful built in sound card.  AND it worked (kind of).  At least enough to test out my setup and see if I liked the idea.

You may even be satisfied with it unless you are doing contest work or weak signal stuff.

As for computing power, it has been known to work on P4 computers.

Yes no problem. It as always fruitful to research your particular model radio to get the right hardware for your rig. Regards, Roger AA1LY

I have a 940S and an LP-PAN and use NaP3 software. The combination has been good for me.  The LP-PAN is available from http://www.telepostinc.com/
A good audio card is key and there is much related information on the Telepost site.

Mr. John Long,

Thanks for the response.  I plan to call you in the next day or so.  Is there a better day/time slot to call.  Don’t want to bother someone if they are busy or on the time clock.  I am retired so I have plenty of time with not too many time restraints … 73 John KC8JRE
