After reading a pretty sad entry on today's Audities list, I decided
to shake things up a bit on this Google group for Powerpopaholic.
First off, contrary to the opinion that power pop is a dying art and
we are all for listening to "Insanely Great Pop Made By People Who
Will Soon Be Eligible for Social Security," I think the genre is
starting to spread out and gain some traction... my proof:
On the hard rock side: New albums by Cheap Trick and Extreme, new
single from Collective Soul
On the alt. country rock rock side: New albums by Wilco and Son Volt,
Rhett Miller, can the Jayhawks be far behind?
On the pop rock side: Mandy Moore, The Lemonheads, Sweet and Hoffs,
Under The Covers Vol.2, Tinted Windows still getting attention here
On the alt. folk side: New Peter Yorn, David Mead, Hosapple and Stamey
On the alt. rock side: Mars Volta (they went melodic!), Robert
Pollard, Dinosaur Jr.
On the indie pop side: Where do I begin? Roger Klug, Roger Manning
Jr., Greg Pope, Michael Carpenter...
And Charlotte Pop Fest this September is bigger than ever!!!!!!!!
So to all you nay sayers --- prove me wrong. Now I'm not saying this
is all strict power pop music. What I am saying is that melodic rock
and the power pop aesthetic has permeated a lot of current music out
there and lots of the genre's oldest bands are still active. More so
that "traditional" rock bands.
