To test the group, and kick off a conversation, would like to chat
about names.

At first i wanted Danger Club, but I don't think it's about danger so
much as skills or empowerment. So i picked "power" because it ties to
so many other things.

Some obvious next steps are a wiki, where we could build lists of must-
have skills and how-tos. Out of laziness, I really don't want to
duplicate what's already out there, but links would be cool.

For kicks, here are some rough notes from the Barcamp 6 sessions. Feel
free to cut, and paste, edit and add... maybe in a new thread?

I'm all about woodland skills -- recognizing edible plants, how to make your own shelter, navigating, setting traps, recognizing animal tracks

Other stuff:
Fixing bicycles
reading an analog watch
basic plumbing
basic electrical wiring
how to look stuff up in a library without a computer

Have you perused the Dangerous Book for Boys and the Daring Book for Girls? Some great stuff in there.

Oh, also:
basic sewing (hand and machine)
knitting or crocheting (for boys and girls -- a remarkably useful skill)
map reading
how to use a compass (true north vs. map north, etc)

Part of an email correspondence I just had:

I'm close to where Sharon Amity and wt harris meet- so a bit closer in
than you. House is 3/4 acre total, so decent sized front and back
yard, and quite normal to have a lot of people over- so might be a
good place to burn in some kids. I was thinking we could take the list
of 50 dangerous things and just run down the list- probably knock a
good deal of them off on one saturday!!

Some are super easy (touch a 9 volt with your tongue) and some will be
fun but should take more time (learn to drive a nail) and some will
take a bit more setup (drive a car!) but it might at least get the
conversation going. I was hanging out at lowes admiring some of the
discounts on some kobalt tool sets (5 pliers or 5 locking pliers for
10 bucks- how is this possible - and seemingly good quality too..
.thank slave labor) and these really bright green hammers. It'd be fun
to have contests or "awards" of tools/equipment - you learn to drive a
nail in your sleep, you earn a hammer- then we get hackerspace to use
the CNC machine to etch your name into the handle... or teach you to!

If you get on the group, adding to the list- eventually we can make a
google doc, and maybe a wiki - let's make the monster list of
everything...

Can we break out the names thread and mission/activities thread so
that they are separate?

Also I'm happy to meet up in perosn one weekend soon so that we can
hammer out the basics of this and get moving. DI, do you happen to
have the full list of 50 dangerous things? We can probably find it
online if not.

Brian- that sounds fine. Anyone can start a new thread, right?
I'm all about the wiki/barcamp process... want something, do it!

In fact, I think I'll make you an admin...
