SSP Workshop and IEEE WiSEE 2023 are around the corner. That is right, we will be in Aveiro, Portugal Next week. 

The SSP Workshop Cake this year features excellent talks by many Experts in the field including Stela Traichova (EIC), Greg Durgin (Georgia Tech), Paul Jaffe (DARPA), and Darel Preble (SSP Institute), to name a few. We have a Cherry on the top of SSP Cake this year presented by Prof. Emdad (WPI). This talk highlights the Importance of Data Sciences in a Variety of Applications, and Success stories in Bridging Industry and Academia for workforce development. Details are below.

Title: Effective Strategies for forging Strong Industry and University Relationships Via Collaborative Data Science Projects,

Abstract: WPI DS program, established in 2013, prioritizes industry partnerships with exceptional corporations, both regionally and internationally through sponsored Graduate Qualifying Projects (GQPs). GQP is a project-based education implementation and approach. This talk presents the elements that support successful GQP. WPI graduate Data Scientists in the last semester of their Data Science MS program apply their comprehensive data science and analytics skills to tackle a real-world problem facing a sponsoring company or organization. These GQP projects offer students the opportunity to work on real-world problems. WPI GQP, since its inception in 2015, has successfully completed more than 100 sponsored GQP projects, and strongly delivered a viable product to the companies. The talk will offer the approach and elements that facilitate a successful GQP and share some success stories. 

Bio: Fatemeh Emdad is the Director of GQP program of Data Sciences of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA, USA. Emdad has led bringing over 100 industry funded research projects for graduate students in data sciences since 2015, particularly by attracting corporate partners to collaborate with students. She also is the co-PI of the first Data Science Research Experience for Undergraduates summer program at WPI and two grants awarded by the WPI Women’s Impact Network. Emdad earned her BSc at Shiraz University, an MSc at Tehran Tarbiat Moallem University, and an MSc and PhD at Colorado State University in Applied Math and Statistics. She completed her postdoctoral work at the University of Texas Medical Branch and was a fellow under Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health of the United States. She is the Author of the Book High Dimensional Data Analysis and numerous peer reviewed journal and conferences.
