On our planet Earth, the game is a zero-sum game. Resources are
what they are, and if someone takes more for themselves, there's
less for others. The blanket is short, so if you cover your head,
you uncover your feet. Expansion into space is NECESSARY, but this
cannot be achieved with chemical propulsion due to obvious physical limitations.
The only way for humanity to expand into the universe is to
make a leap in culture and human quality, experimenting with propulsion
alternatives to chemical propulsion.
I strongly agree with the goal of exploring alternatives to chemical propulsion,
even though I would not give up on the hope of humanity FINDING a way to achieve long-term sustainability for humans living in this solar system.
BUT... for global policies, which SRI represents... we are facing one of those decision trees where we will juggle SEVERAL valid branches in parallel. Some valid branches are much more conservative and near-term than others.
The idea of ion propulsion is far from new. There is much work ALREADY out there.
So we need to ask ourselves: what is the new action?
There are many ways proposed to generate the electric force
for ion propulsion. On a quick check... I am very sorry at
google.scholar.com I see no reference to the solid decades-old papers by Werbos and Fork, like the talk presented at the JIETSSP conference at Ohio Aerospace Institute, describing how to use D-D fusion in space, an important thread for which there is a LOT of new enabling information. But are there OTHER sources of electrical energy in space?
Just a few minutes ago, I sent a talk proposal to Austria, on how to follow up on the work of Leitenstorfer, which held up MUCH better under scrutiny at NSF than all the many many proposals out there for vacuum energy and such.
There is also some new physics out there of importance:
Given the horrid new tensions between Russia, US and China, I have proposed that
Austria might be a good base for the necessary new serious science.
PNN is one of these possibilities, but if it doesn't overcome the obstacle
of censorship at various national and international space agencies,
it won't be the vehicle for change we so eagerly await.
